Some people living in these encampments have pets, and use these pets as a reason to not go to a shelter, treatment, etc. Having a pet should not be a barrier to getting healthy and reclaiming a life of dignity. The Sheriff is willing to consider providing foster care to a pet of a person currently living in an illicit tent encampment to allow them to get into a shelter or treatment. Encampments should never be next to our homes, schools, or playgrounds. Yesterday, I joined residents in Encino to tour several homeless encampments around the Sepulveda Basin. I listened to their concerns and witnessed firsthand the frustration and neglect they’ve experienced from our city officials. We must do more to provide those in need with the right care, resources, and support to help them get off the streets. Nowhere in Los Angeles should conditions like this be allowed. It’s time to do better.
