Sleepless in Fursungi: Residents Terrorized by Midnight Bike Roars and Reckless Stunts In the early hours of May 14, just a day after a bomb scare in the area, residents of Fursungi were jolted awake by the deafening noise of modified motorcycles racing through the streets. Between 2:30 am and 6:30 am, bikers repeatedly sped from Bhekrai Nagar bus stop to the Power House railway bridge, revving illegal silencers and firing loud exhaust bursts that left citizens frightened and unable to sleep. This is not an isolated incident. Residents of societies including Green County Phases 1 and 2, Solitaire, Nalanda Nagri, and Florence say such disturbances have become a regular nightmare. Open spaces behind Green County are reportedly being used almost nightly for birthday celebrations, alcohol consumption, dangerous bike stunts, and social media reel-making activities. Back in July 2023, Pune Times Mirror had already highlighted the growing nuisance. “We have repeatedly complained to authorities and even informed the landowner, but no concrete action has been taken,” said Rahul Wautre, a resident of Green County. Residents claim they contacted police helpline 113 and visited Gadital police station, only to be redirected to the locked Fursungi police station. The relentless noise from modified silencers severely affects senior citizens, children, and patients by disturbing sleep and creating fear late at night. Although Pune Traffic Police have launched drives against illegal exhausts, penalizing over 3,000 riders and crushing confiscated silencers, locals say stricter night patrolling and immediate enforcement are urgently needed to restore peace in Fursungi.

The residents of Bukoto Katende Zone state that the situation is not acceptable on any level and urge Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) to listen to the noise, saying that they cannot sleep. They add that residents along Kisota Road and surrounding communities also cannot sleep, and tell National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) that a bulldozer is not needed for this issue. They explain that a bar has been built in what is clearly a wetland in their residential neighborhood land that used to serve as parking yards for trucks and is operating every single night with blaring music and shouting on microphones, showing complete disregard for the people living there. They say that families cannot sleep, there is no peace, and there is no enforcement. The residents point out that the wetland was not cleared quietly, but in broad daylight over time, under KCCA’s watch. They note that evidence has been shared and complaints have been raised, yet nothing has been done. They ask where the City Public Health Department, enforcement, and accountability are. They emphasize that the issue is bigger than noise, describing it as environmental destruction, public health negligence, and a failure of duty. The residents stress that a wetland is not just empty land, as it protects the city from flooding, supports ecosystems, and is legally protected. They warn that allowing it to be grabbed and turned into a noise-polluting commercial space sets a dangerous precedent that laws and communities do not matter. They further argue that when a bar operates nightly at full volume in a residential area with no intervention, it sends a clear message that enforcement is optional which, they insist, it is not. The residents call on Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) to do its job by shutting down illegal operations in protected wetlands, enforcing noise regulations immediately, responding to citizen reports in real time, and restoring order to protect the environment and give residents back their right to peace at night. They state that the situation is ongoing, visible, and documented, and urge KCCA to listen to the noise levels from across the road where Gen. Wamala was shot. They conclude that the matter demands action immediately. Cc: Eddie Okila(One of the residents)

Pune’s Viman Nagar is witnessing mounting traffic disorder following the opening of Bengaluru’s popular Rameshwaram Café, with food enthusiasm spilling over into public inconvenience and safety risks. Since its launch, the café has attracted massive crowds from across the city. However, the heavy footfall has resulted in severe traffic congestion on the already busy stretch near Phoenix Marketcity. Cars, two-wheelers and auto-rickshaws are being parked indiscriminately—often double-parked—while vehicles halt mid-road to drop passengers, creating frequent bottlenecks. A Pune Times Mirror spot check revealed startling scenes, including a car parked directly opposite the café for over 45 minutes, with occupants eating inside the vehicle. Despite the availability of valet parking, many visitors continue to ignore it, worsening the situation. The chaos is further aggravated by the one-way traffic rule introduced in Viman Nagar over a month ago, which residents say has caused confusion and longer detours. With the café crowd added to the mix, pedestrians—families with children included—are seen crossing the road at unsafe points. Diners are also cutting across carriageways through gaps in dividers, while speeding vehicles swerve to bypass illegally parked cars, creating a dangerous environment. Residents note a stark contrast with earlier conditions, when traffic police maintained order through regular patrols, wheel clamping, and towing of illegally parked vehicles. Now, the absence of visible traffic enforcement has allowed the disorder to spiral. What should have been a welcome culinary addition has instead turned into a daily ordeal for commuters and locals alike. Citizens are urging the traffic police to intervene immediately with strict enforcement and crowd management, warning that without swift action, the area risks becoming a permanent traffic and safety black spot.
