The Space Docking Experiment (SpaDeX) is a groundbreaking mission by ISRO to demonstrate India's capability in in-space docking, a critical technology for future human spaceflight, satellite servicing, and advanced space missions. Scheduled for launch on December 30, 2024, using the PSLV-C60 rocket, the mission will deploy two small spacecraftโChaser (SDX01) and Target (SDX02)โinto a 470 km circular orbit. The mission aims to achieve autonomous rendezvous and docking, transfer electrical power between the docked spacecraft, and manage the combined control of the docked system. Additionally, it will demonstrate the functionality of payloads post-undocking. Key innovations include an indigenous docking mechanism, advanced sensors like the Laser Range Finder (LRF), inter-satellite communication links, and GNSS-based relative orbit determination. This will be historically important mission. I literally canโt wait for this. It always makes me nervous to see this four stage rocket go, however, I know itโs true tried and tested technology. Good luck ISRO.
