By chance, bird keeper Liz happened upon Orville, our 7-year-old male Temminck’s tragopan, performing a full courtship display! Orville was named after Orville Redenbacher because he pops (like popcorn) straight up in the air if anyone gets too close. He’s done that ever since he was a juvenile. For tragopans, it is the male that primarily performs these elaborate courtship displays to attract females. Here, they do so by inflating their blue and red throat lappets or bibs, and the blue, horn-like projections above the eyes to appear more vibrant. The display includes bowing, fanning tail feathers and finally, he would hide behind rocks or logs, before approaching the female. The display also includes whistles and low-booming sounds. Quite a performance!

A curious shark turns an ordinary surf session into a tense standoff off the California coast. Drone footage shows the shark tracking a surfer from below the surface, circling near his board as the unaware surfer floats in open water. After spotting the danger, the drone operator used his drone to warn the surfer, who quickly paddled for shore. The shark eventually peeled away, but not before creating a moment that left even the person filming it on edge.

He carefully freed its wing and gently dropped it to the people waiting below. The bird flew away safe and unharmed. Real hero energy right there, proof that good people still show up for animals when it matters. 🙌

Outside the national museum of anthropology in Mexico City this statue of Tlaloc weighs 168 tons and is 23 feet or 7 meters tall. It was discovered in the 1860s in a dry stream bed near Texcoco during the digging of an irrigation canal and brought to Mexico City in 1963 for the opening of the national anthropology museum in 1964. As we walk around it, notice the scoop marks on the side. Even though the hands are broken off, it appears as though they very likely used to meet around the navel, similar to other monolithic statues found nearby which we’ll see. Upon its arrival in Mexico City, a tremendous thunderstorm ensued, the hardest in recent memory, which many took to be a sign of Tlaloc’s presence in Mexico.
