A church in Nantucket has CANCELLED its annual 4th of July reading of the Declaration and Bill of Rights after 25 years. The reason? Its leaders now believe the founding documents were bound up with the ideas of "whiteness" and have been "unequally applied" across American history. But the church forgot the most important part. It's true that the promises of America weren't applied equally: Slavery, Jim Crow, the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882, the denial for generations of women's voting rights. But what CHANGED all that? What philosophies and documents did brave pioneers like Frederick Douglass and Martin Luther King Jr. utilize to fight these injustices? Our founding documents. The very documents that this church is now calling problematic. They're not the problem. They're the solution. We must live up to them, not change them to fit our current worldviews.
