I’m no stair builder, but I wonder if the planks aren’t large enough to cover the whole tread, why put the smaller piece on the front edge of the stair, where it’ll get the most use and the most pressure from people sleeping at the edges, particularly when going down stairs? The narrower width gets less glue and thus can take less pressure. Seems to me the larger board at the front would have more surface area for more glue and stronger adhesion.
