The beauty of Jean-Pierre Melville. From ‘Le Samouraï’ and ‘Le Cercle Rouge’ to ‘Army of Shadows’ or ‘Bob le Flambeur’, the cinema of Jean-Pierre Melville, the undisputed master of French polar films, immersed us in a world of precision, silence, and moral codes.

Le Samouraï (1967, Melville) "I’m not interested in realism. All my films hinge on the fantastic. I’m not a documentarian; a film is first and foremost a dream, and it’s absurd to copy life in an attempt to produce an exact re-creation of it." --- Jean-Pierre Melville

Jean-Pierre Melville

Jean-Pierre Melville wrote the screenplay of "Le Samouraï" (1967) with Alain Delon in mind as the lead. When Melville went to Delon's apartment and read the screenplay to him, Delon listened with his elbows on his knees and his face buried in his hands. He listened without moving. Suddenly, he stopped Melville and said, "You’ve been reading the script for seven and a half minutes now and there hasn’t been a word of dialogue. That’s good enough for me. I’ll do the film. What’s the title?". When Melville told him the title of the movie, Delon lead him to the bedroom which contained only a leather couch and Samurai's lance, sword and dagger. The rest is history. ("The Untold Story Of ‘Le Samouraï’", The Beverly Theater, Letterboxd, 2024 & IMDb)

Le Samouraï is a French neo-noir film directed by Jean-Pierre Melville. It features Alain Delon as Jef Costello, a stoic/methodical/rules-based hitman who lives by a strict code, kinda like a samurai. Delon is beautiful in this film. He doesn’t need dialogue to make an impression
