In a new interview with Bret Baier on Fox, Trump says the National Archives should have begged him for the documents back: "The only way NARA could ever get this stuff, this back, would be 'please, please, please could we get them back.'" NARA *did* ask Trump for the documents and then subpoenaed him when he refused. Even then, Trump lied about fully complying with the subpoena and instructed his aide, Walt Nauta, to move the boxes to a different location. Trump gives a incredibly weak excuse that he was "very busy" and "wanted to go through the boxes and get all of [his] personal things out" before turning them over.

He reportedly told prosecutors that he could not remember a single instance of documents being declassified before leaving the White House for Trump’s private property. He also said he knew of no “standing order,” about declassifying documents that Trump brought home. Meadows also reportedly had part of his biography rewritten in order to cover up for the fact that Trump had classified documents in his office after leaving the White House. He reportedly told investigators he had it rewritten because he knew it was troublesome for Trump. Meadows could very well take the stand against Trump in the documents case and that could be extremely harmful to Trump’s potential defense. Ultimately, however, the documents don’t need to have been “classified” for Trump to have had violated the Espionage Act. Do you think Trump will ultimately be convicted in the documents case? Trump wants to be Putin's friend, gain Putin's approval. There might even be compromising issue that Russians might have on him. There's also been lifetime of deals between Trump and Russians, so he's built up a massive economic history of dealing with Russians. He clearly wants to get back to working with them. But all we can say is that when it comes to Putin, Trump is absolutely going to do what he wants to do. It doesn't matter what the public opinion is.
