Exactly two weeks ago, on December 13th, 2024, I had the honour of attending the World Health Organization (WHO) launch in Geneva of the Global Status Report on Drowning Prevention—its first-ever comprehensive report on this critical issue. The report reveals a remarkable 38% drop in the global drowning death rate since 2000, marking a significant achievement in global health. However, it was disheartening to learn that while the WHO Europe region has reported a 68% reduction in drowning incidents, the African region has seen only a 3% decrease. This disparity highlights the urgent need for focused efforts and resources in regions that are still heavily impacted. In 2021 alone, drowning claimed approximately 300,000 lives worldwide, with the majority occurring in low to middle-income countries, particularly in Africa and Asia. Alarmingly, 24% of these victims were children under the age of 5. These statistics resonate deeply with me. As an African married to an Asian, and as a parent to a daughter who embodies both heritages, this issue is profoundly personal.
