What are the chances illegal mexicans do all these things properly? My money is on 0%.

I’m an engineer and ICC licensed inspector. This video should be a mandatory class for any permitting a deck. You should see some of the dumb shit people try to install.

Use more posts if possible and no ledger. Ledgers will eventually leak water past the siding.

Insightful.

My grandpa didn’t do all of this and only had nails and a hammer and his deck is still standing strong 48 years later… is it the wood or something?

Profilbild von Architect NLA
Architect NLAvor 4 Monaten

They had the better wood and the expertise, now we just have tools. They also had fewer chemicals flying around in the air.

Been in the construction industry for 30 years. This is the true difference between Jack charging you $10k to build your deck and Pedro charging you $4k You get what you pay for. (No hate on the Pedros of the world. We also need that option sometimes, so thank you.)

This guy fails the deck framing. Never attach the rim/ledger board directly to your house (especially OSB). The rim/ledger should be mounted standing off the structure. You can make your own standoffs or purchase them at a lumber yard. There are one inch pucks you lag or bolt through and/or steel U shaped brackets for mounting also. What this guy did is guaranteed to rot the wall. 100%.

Nice job! We tend to do things a little differently over here — Germans do love to over-engineer — but I could totally see myself building my deck exactly like that.

Actually great to see that he shows the wrong way too so you can really see the difference in how important it is to do it right.

If your deck's less than 36 in what stupid state makes you do that. Anything less than 3' why not make it floating.
