Our CEO, Steve Chapman, recently had the honor of ringing the opening bell on Nasdaq to celebrate our 10th anniversary as a public company. As part of the bell-ringing ceremony, Steve spoke about when and how Natera was founded — and how the company has evolved since then. We started with a dream to help people conceive healthy families and then applied what we knew about testing tiny quantities of DNA to preserve transplanted organs and detect cancer recurrence. Our work is grounded in science, anchored by constant innovation and applied by a talented team that is ushering in an entirely new area of disease management. Seeing Natera’s name in bright lights on the big screen in Times Square is an amazing nod to how far we’ve come and where we’re going. Congratulations to all Naterans!

“If I didn’t have this test, I would have no idea I have stage four cancer.” Over the weekend I attended the Young Survival Coalition conference where I met Lori. Lori was diagnosed with stage two breast cancer in 2024 and completed treatment. When she asked what monitoring would look like afterward, she was told it would mostly be based on symptoms. That wasn’t good enough for her. She asked for the Signatera test to detect recurrence earlier. Her oncologist supported it…but insurance denied it multiple times. And here’s the part that stopped me in my tracks: the test was ordered by her oncologist, but the denial was signed by a family medicine doctor working for the insurance company. Lori told me something during our conversation that meant a lot to me: watching my videos helped her understand how important patient advocacy is, and it gave her the determination to keep pushing. Eventually she was able to get the test. Her first result was negative. Four months later, the second test came back positive. A PET scan confirmed stage four metastatic breast cancer with no symptoms. Because she advocated for herself, her cancer was detected earlier than it otherwise would have been. That means more treatment options and a different path forward. Lori, it was an honor to meet you. Dr. David Izquierdo and his team developed the novel radiotracer [64Cu]-FBP8 that can identify fibrin accumulation in the lung, brain and heart tissue of Long COVID patients when visualized with PET. “Now the question is; can we [use this technology] with patients that have symptoms, but don’t have any clinical evidence,” said Izquierdo. “What we’re trying to do here is determine if Long COVID has a signal that we can measure, quantify and detect in vivo, noninvasively.”

We are excited to be working on a new research study which is aiming to create a lateral flow test (LFT) to determine whether a patient is suffering a stroke. We are working alongside the University of Birmingham and University Hospitals Birmingham on the Ghost study, which will see us obtain saliva from patients who are demonstrating stroke symptoms, to help create an LFT which in turn will help to speed up access to brain-saving treatment and saving more patients.
