Something really cool happened in swimming this week. After 16 years, the 50m free world record got broken by Australian swimmer McEvoy. What’s very interesting is the approach he has been following for a few years now. Super low volume (2-3 sessions per week, less than 1000m per sessions which some swimmers do more than just for warm up) in a pool with cameras and other devices to track different values and of course getting stronger with weights.

i built an open world minigame that's controlled with hand movements only here's a step-by-step tutorial: > started with my mediapipe + threejs template (see QT) > added a 3D model made by quaternius > sent a few prompts to gemini 3... --- prompt #1: repurpose the attached script, but now I want to import a gltf model (assets/model.gltf) and use that in the scene instead of the cube when the user moves their hand, a waypoint indicator should move around the scene, and the 3D model should smoothly move there when the user makes a fist, the model should jump the 3D model contains bundled animations in it. use the "idle", "run", and "jump" animations --- prompt #2: make this a procedural open world adventure. generate very simple procedural voxel terrain when the model gets near the edges of the screen, the camera should move, allowing the model to keep going in that direction --- prompt #3: add some floating glowing gems around the map that the user can collect --- i made some manual tweaks for styling and game feel, but that's the gist of it thanks for reading if you got all the way here full code is available at my link in bio

And with that, the US Open dream is over 😞 Just wrapped up U.S. Open local qualifying at Medford Village Country Club Didn’t quite have my best stuff off the tee today—and on a course this tight, that’s a problem. When I did find fairways, I couldn’t get it close enough to give myself real chances. Greens were absolutely rapid if you were out of position… borderline terrifying at times 😅 but I did hole some really good putts to grind out pars and keep the round alive. Only one birdie all day though, and that’s never going to get it done at this level. Finished +3 (75) — currently 37th out of 120 (top third of the field), so there are still some positives to take. Battled well, stayed patient, and didn’t let it completely get away from me—which is something I’m trying to get better at in these events. One qualifier down, one more to go in June for The Open Championship. Plenty of work to do before then—tighten up the driver, sharpen the wedges, and turn a few of those pars into birdies. Another opportunity coming… and I’ll be ready to give it a proper run 👊 Thanks as always to Shot Scope for the wonderful stats!!

The stated goal is for kids to “learn about the different options that exist for who they can be.” One of the co-founders, Associate Professor Dianne Berg, previously said: “Everyone should be learning that there’s diversity in gender identity and that what makes you real is not what your body parts are, but how you think and feel.” She added that she has already begun using the dolls with her own patients who are between five and ten years old. It's 2030 and you are reviewing humanoid robots. A Tesla. A Google. An Apple. An OpenAI. A Meta. A Figure. And a bunch of Chinese-made ones. Which one is best, and why? I think the Tesla understands the world much better. Why? There were eight Teslas around me on the freeway today. Start there. No other robot company has that data. But my robot is parked at the local high school twice a day. Its cameras see humans in all of our weirdness. How we move. Where we go. Where we walk. Who we talk with. What you are wearing. Whether your hair was combed this morning. That data will lead to robotics breakthroughs. Apple might keep up with its Vision Pro data, but it is too freaked out by the privacy implications of using said data. (On the front are six cameras and a couple of TOF -- Time Of Flight -- sensors that can see everything in your home in great detail). Google has a lot of data, for sure. All my: 1. Email. 2. Calendars. 3. Photos. 4. TV watching behavior. 5. Contacts. 6. Documents and spreadsheets. 7. Files. 8. Location data. So I expect Google's robot will be attractive to many. But how do you see the others shake out over the next five years? Make some guesses. But remember what an AI pioneer told me years ago about AI: it's all about the data. The Chinese ones have huge advantages: the Chinese have more data on their citizens, and many more citizens to boot AND they can make robots cheaper than we can. But now that you know OpenAI is building its own robot you have caught wind of what I've heard from many in San Francisco and Silicon Valley: that humanoid robots are the real prize of AI and will be highly profitable for those that can make them and find customers willing to buy them. Here, too, I learned long ago never to bet against Elon Musk. Will you?

Been waiting a long time to say this. Over the last few years, a lot of energy has gone into something that weighed heavily on me both mentally and emotionally. Last year especially brought me to one of the lowest points of my life, and through that process I realized I needed to make a choice to let go, move forward, and choose forgiveness. Once I did, I immediately felt a sense of peace that I hadn’t felt in a long time. After meeting with my legal team and reviewing all of the relevant information, it became clear to me that I had been miscommunicated to by a former team member who no longer works for me. I learned that David’s company had in fact offered and provided insurance coverage for my initial medical bills totaling approximately $110,000, along with an additional $41,000 in medical expenses that David paid out of pocket without pushback. This information was not properly communicated to me before the lawsuit was filed. David helped cover my medical costs, and we now have clear communication moving forward regarding future coverage as well. I want to apologize for the confusion this situation created publicly. More than anything, I’m grateful to finally leave this chapter in the past. Some things take a lot out of you privately. I’m just happy to move forward now, focus on the future, and put my energy into the people and things I love. Thank you to everyone who supported me through some of the darkest moments of my life. Your support genuinely helped carry me through.

Last week I did spot checks at Masaka Regional Referral Hospital after hearing from the public and whistleblowers. Yesterday I met with the hospital administration and we agreed on the following; 1. Accountability & Monitoring: Deploy more hospital inspectors and staff to the control room to monitor CCTV cameras. Take firm action against absenteeism, extortion of money from patients, and unprofessional conduct by some health workers. 2. No Excuses: The administration informed me that there has been a recent salary enhancement and more recruitment. Therefore, there is no justification for absenteeism without valid reason, extortion, or unprofessionalism. 3. Oversight: I committed to visiting the hospital once every month to monitor progress together with the administration. Spot checks will also continue based on reports from whistleblowers. 4. Service Delivery: We discussed the delayed payment of interns and the need for Government to make scan services completely free, since most people cannot afford them. I also raised complaints from Banna Masaka that some medical workers, especially nurses, are rude to patients. The administration promised to continue counseling staff to be more compassionate and patient-centered. 5. Progress: With the new complex now operational, no mothers are sleeping on the floor anymore and our NICU is fully equipped. 6. Fighting Fraud: I ordered the arrest of a conman who has been defrauding patients. The administration claims some people keep him in the hospital, saying he is an "NRM cadre". It is unacceptable to use NRM or any political party as a cover to steal from patients. I also committed to lobbying Government for more infrastructure and drugs for the hospital. Bakeries filled with artisan breads and pastries are all over China now showing foreign tastes have been developed on mass scale in China ☕️ China is opening up. Dozens of EU countries can now travel to China visa free. Yesterday New Zealand was added to the list. Foreigner visits to China is up 305% in Q1 2024, when measures from the same period last year ✈️ More foreigners are coming to China and it’s a great thing. The world needs to learn more about China. This country is simply amazing and truly changing the future of the world 🇨🇳 Come here to see a nation who is embracing their commitments to producing clean energy. It’s simply incredible how much of the auto industry is now dominated by EVs 🚗 Visiting China is taking a step in the future. Such an absolute pleasure to be back in the country for an extended stay 😃

Part Two (2/2): In order to graze or pierce the top of the ear, the round would had to have been fired directly in front or behind, not at a perpendicular angle. First, You can know this is part of plan by Laws and Orders and how this sets up the finale. Second, you can read articles of the bullet whizzing by President Trump at the angle and trajectory reported by CNN… So, where did that bullet thump in the same time sequence when the other two bullets hit their targets sooner at the same angle and trajectory? Also, CNN says the snipers returned fire… There were 5 rounds in return, not in Burst Rounds, all single 1-1-1-1-1. The return fire by the “snipers” sounds exactly the same as the first 3 rounds fired at PDJT. And they sound NOTHING like an AR-15 whatsoever. Then there’s one lone round 11 seconds after the 5 rounds returned by “snipers” who are all around and had the target identified as the media says “they were told by Secret Service to hold their fire until the shooter engaged”… PLUS those on the roof behind President Trump were closer to the location of the gunman than PDJT, so, 350-450 feet away. So, are you telling me that trained snipers needed more than one round for a lone shooter? Are you telling me that trained snipers with an identified target were told to “stand down” until engagement? Are you tellling me that that trained snipers with an identified target allowed a lone round 11 seconds after return engagement? And/or needed another round 11 seconds after 5 returned on a lone wolf shooter? You clearly know NOTHING about snipers if you say ‘yes’ on one, a combo, or all of those. 🇮🇷🇮🇱| A little more to understand... My opinion: The war may end in a few days or last a lot longer—all depending on whether or not the US joins Israel. Israel is not able to fight against Iran for much longer; its interceptors have a certain capability threshold, and reports already suggest it is rationing its interceptor missiles, and we've seen how 12-17 interceptors were launched, yet Iranian missiles still made an impact. It all comes down to whether the US is willing to go to war with Iran or not; it's likely they will if you consider Trump's administrative behavior since he took office. But honestly, if they are smart, they will not. - A little about Iran's missile situation: Israel says it's conducting operations in northwestern and western Iran to prevent the reactivation of missile bases in Tabriz, Kermanshah, and Khorramabad. A significant portion of the Israeli Air Force is now focused on these 3 sites to prevent further missile launches from those locations. This suggests that the sites they claim they destroyed did not suffer strategic damage, and the destroyed hangars were of minimal value. As a result, Israel continuously carries out operations and remains engaged to prevent Iran from reactivating its capabilities in the west. If these 3 regions are abandoned, Israel will move on to target other strategic sites. These 3 missile bases are among Iran's key assets. The missiles are intact and untouched, it's the launchers that are affected, and they can easily be reactivated, but it's difficult under continuous attacks. Other missile bases in the south remain untouched and have so far not been used, as they are probably being reserved for strikes against the US. Missile launches are mainly launched from the center and north of Iran, some from the western regions as well. The reason for limited and isolated launches these past few days has several explanations, mainly that Iran is testing to recognize new patterns everytime a serious attack is carried out, as Israel continuously changes its defensive behavior to prevent Iran's intelligence from learning it; thus, isolated launches, followed by a bigger, deadlier, and more accurate attack with 30 launches as we saw today.

Model-Free Reinforcement Learning (MFRL) has been alluring, especially with supercharged compute with physics on GPU. However, the methods use 0-th order gradients, and are often not the best optimizers. Can we do better than PPO in continuous control for robotics? Turns out yes! 🥳 tl;dr: Faster, better RL than PPO in continuous control 💪 The answer lies in using more information from the simulation. We are juicing the simulation on GPU as it is, why not use it for gradients as well? This has been a driving question in a series of our works. We first studied this problem in ICLR 2022 paper on Short Horizon Actor Critic Naive gradient based methods are stuck in local minima and have exploding/vanishing gradients. SHAC solved this problem truncated rollouts and model based value estimation, where the model is Differentiable Sim. This boosted sample efficiency and wall-clock time immensely especially in high dimensional systems such as humanoids Yet, given enough compute PPO often caught up. Our follow up paper on on Adaptive Horizon Actor Critic at ICML 2024 discovers the cause and provides a fix. However, we find that even when given ground-truth dynamics, not all gradients are useful due to sample error. 1st-Order Model-Based Reinforcement Learning methods employing differentiable simulation provide gradients with reduced variance but are susceptible to bias in scenarios involving stiff dynamics, such as physical contact. We find that back-propagating through contact and long trajectories drastically reduces gradient accuracy. Using this insight, we propose AHAC to dynamically adapt its roll-out horizon to avoid differentiating through stiff contact. AHAC is a first-order model-based RL algorithm that learns high-dimensional tasks in minutes (wall clock) and outperforms PPO by 40%, even in the limit of data provided to PPO. This work is led by Ignat Georgiev alongside Krishnan Srinivasan, Jie Xu, Eric Heiden and ample assistance from warp team at NVIDIA Robotics (Miles Macklin)
