The Lebanese government banned Hezbollah's military wing last month after it opened fire on Israel. It has been extending state authority into the south, doing everything a fragile government can do short of open confrontation, but it still cannot force the issue. Here is why: the last time a Lebanese government moved aggressively against Hezbollah was 2008. In any state that respects itself, the ministers of a party that openly defies state decisions in practice cannot remain in office; they should be compelled to resign immediately or be dismissed without hesitation. We need actions, not statements. The Lebanese Army must enforce state decisions firmly and without selectivity.
