Please explain to me what you mean when you say 'free Palestine'. Precisely. What does a free Palestine look like to you? Where are its borders? Who lives there? Who is in government? How is that government chosen?
Quite happy to explain precisely what I mean. By a free Palestine, I mean essentially what the UK Government now formally supports and recognises: a sovereign, viable and democratic Palestinian state living alongside a safe and secure Israel, with both peoples entitled to peace, security and self-determination. On borders, the British Government now recognises the State of Palestine on provisional borders based on the 1967 lines, with mutually agreed land swaps to be settled through negotiations — comprising the West Bank and Gaza. On government, the UK position is equally clear: Hamas should have no role in the future governance of Palestine, and the Palestinian state should be led through reformed, democratic Palestinian institutions. So “Free Palestine”, does not mean the destruction of Israel, expelling Israelis, or replacing one people with another. It means Palestinians being free to live in their own sovereign state, alongside Israelis living securely in theirs. This is the formal position of the British Government, which recognises both the State of Israel and the State of Palestine.
I agree. I've asked this question of people who chant Free Palestine I've received a variety of answers. Some want the expulsion or death of all jews from Israel, some also want the expulsion of all Druze & Christians etc. So 'Free Palestine' can have many interpretations.
The variety of answers is why I ask the question. I was in France a while ago & came across a free Palestine demo. I asked 2 guys to explain what they meant by that. In their explanations to me they realised that they completely disagreed on what the chant meant...
I exited stage left & let them argue among themselves. I thank you for your comprehensive answer, which I agree with.

Except that he can have an opinion and voice it. He can take part in a concert advertised in support of something. People are all forewarned and have a choice. That’s different to ambushing of the public by another act.
But that rather misses my point. I’m not suggesting Ed should “ambush” an audience with a political speech, or even that he has to say anything about Palestine. I’m questioning his statement that there’s “a reason I don’t use my professional platform for politics”, because Ukraine shows that isn’t an absolute principle. He publicly supported Ukrainians, performed at a benefit concert and explained that he “wanted to do something rather than not do anything”. And I thought that was admirable. Here, a fellow artist has been removed by the promoters after speaking out. Ed doesn’t have to agree with everything Macklemore says, but he could still show some solidarity with an artist losing a platform for expressing his views. That isn’t about ambushing the public. It’s about whether the instinct to “do something rather than not do anything” applies consistently.

Ginger guitar goblin Ed Sheeran is currently on a huge international tour, or he was, until one of his support acts, Macklemore (not to be confused with Michael Moore), started mouthing off with his 14-year-old girl Instagram opinions on Israel. I was ready to condemn cancel culture coming for the left, and then I saw Macklemore in "Jew face". This wasn't for a Borat film. This is just what's acceptable these days for young lefties. I should point out that this was in 2014. This wasn't him last week coming out saying, "Welcome to the stage, Ed Sheeran," but this provides some context as to what he’s saying now. In a statement on his website, he explained that he had worn a fake beard, wig and “witch nose” to disguise himself at what was a secret show so that he could “walk around unnoticed and surprise the crowd with a short performance”. Oh yeah, nothing helps you blend into the crowd more than an insane papier-mâché Nazi propaganda costume. Unfortunately for Macklemore, a lot of stadiums are owned by Jewish guys, such as Robert Kraft who, according to Macklemore, rallied other stadium owners to get him kicked off the tour. Everyone weighed in with an opinion, from Miss Rachel to Pink. Ed Sheeran tried to placate everyone. In a statement posted to Instagram, Sheeran said he was “appalled” by the conflict, and “the suffering and pain caused on both sides”. He said: “Macklemore asked to join my tour last year and I agreed, because I respect him as an artist... Macklemore coming off the tour was the promoter’s decision, it was not mine. “There’s a reason I do not use my professional platform for politics – my audience includes young people... [T]hose who come to my shows do not expect a political forum,” Sheeran wrote. But in today's highly polarised society, with so many people on the side of barbarous third-world terrorists who want to kill them, this didn't placate anyone. All the supporting acts for his tour have pulled out, every single one of them. If this doesn't show that there's a sort of social coercion, a Soviet-style enforcement of opinion in the creative industries, then I don't know what will. You'd think maybe some of them might be against murderers, terrorists who want to kill them, but no. They know they have to have the Free Palestine opinion, or they'll be attacked. Man, I feel sorry for Ed Sheeran. He just wants to sing his nice songs about holding hands with a girl. He doesn't want to be a spokesman at the United Nations. He's not Boutros Boutros Boutros Ghali. He's not got a megaphone at a Palestine protest. He doesn’t want his music to be politicised and I think that’s good, because as soon as you come out with political opinions, you start alienating people. And I think it's perfectly fine for Ed Sheeran to not have opinions about some ancient tribal feud in the desert, 10,000 miles away. Macklemore and Beoga and the other nobodies might get a moment in the spotlight from their Palestantrum, but show business is a business.
