They are completely out of it.. The Millipedes secrete a toxin that the Lemurs like to rub on their fur which intoxicates the lemur. It’s called Bezoquinone.

1) The benzoquinone in the millipedes' secretions is known to repel mosquitoes, which can carry diseases. By applying the secretions to their fur, the lemurs may be protecting themselves from mosquito-borne illnesses. 2) secretions can cause the lemurs to salivate profusely and enter a state of intoxication. That is what he is feeling here! 3) secretions are believed to help lemurs ward off parasites, specifically gastrointestinal nematodes that cause itchy rashes around their backsides

The behavior of lemurs "getting high" off millipedes in the jungle is actually a fascinating example of self-medication in the animal kingdom. Red-fronted lemurs, native to Madagascar, have been observed engaging in a peculiar ritual where they capture giant millipedes and chew on them, causing the millipedes to release their toxic secretions. These secretions contain benzoquinone, a substance that has a dual purpose for the lemurs: it acts as a natural pesticide, warding off pesky mosquitoes, and it also has a narcotic effect on the lemurs. After biting the millipedes and causing them to release their secretions, the lemurs will rub the toxic mixture on their fur. This behavior is thought to serve as a form of self-medication, helping to treat or prevent gastrointestinal parasites, which are a common problem for lemurs. The millipede secretions, particularly the benzoquinone, are believed to help cleanse the lemurs' digestive systems of these parasites, reducing symptoms like itching and weight loss. Interestingly, the lemurs seem to have learned to tolerate the millipedes' toxins, and they even appear to enjoy the temporary "high" that the benzoquinone provides. This behavior demonstrates the incredible adaptability and ingenuity of these primates in using their environment to their advantage. #medicate
