Less interceptions. Same elite play. So what changed? “Man, f*** them hands.” Charles Woodson on why DBs aren’t getting picks anymore…

I feel like coaching got conservative at some point. Not wanting DBs to play the ball because some of these dudes with poor ball skills were losing track of the receiver or getting grabby when they looked back. So they'd end up giving up the big play. And defenses have gotten so focused on not giving up the explosive play. Keep everything in front. Don't take a risk. Don't leave us exposed. So guys are playing more safe and conservative and just trying to do their jobs.

so glad c wood said that last part!!! alot of the times these dudes get mossed nowadays cuz they didn’t simply just turn around and find the ball 😂😂

Because qb play is better with mobility and offensive coordinators are better. They constantly move there top receivers around and stay away from elite corners as much as possible. And most DCs keep there best corner on one side

@RSherman_25 Modern NFL offenses rely much more on the quick pass game, compared to years past. Quarterbacks, even the below average ones, are generally more accurate too. It’s harder to get picks when the rules favor the offense so heavily.

@WillBlackmon Great discussion here Sherm. Hearing from a GOAT about this was dope.

What’s being missed is… these are both 2 ways Athletes before the NFL 😂😂😂 they have ball skills. Not everyone does. Thats why it’s hard for Greats to coach sometimes, everybody ain’t you.

Want some pick 6s? Come to Chicago

agreed, corners used to bait qbs more often back then.. it’s a lot to do with what coaches are teaching in film and practice, they want them to protect against the deep ball and keep everything in front of them and either break it up or make a tackle immediately

Finding the ball less when passing is more prevalent than ever 😂😂👎👎 mfs just can’t read the plays anymore so they just react instead of getting ahead of the play to pick the ball off

i feel like this is where @jayceehorn_ separates himself from those guys at the top of the list & to me he’s better than most the guys usually listed in front of him

I say this all the time and when I played i used to look for the ball. Fuck that play thru there hands😭

Blame Revis. He made playing through the hands seem like a true sign of skill so now DBs will watch the ball into a guys hands just to try and poke it. And these kids overall just don’t have ball skills bc they don’t play basketballl or baseball no more

@RSherman_25 part of it is the penalties those refs r so quick to throw a flag at the sight of any contact downfield that coaches dont want dudes taking those same risks so just let em catch it and get em down or play thru the hands

They're not getting their head turned around. It's several cats get hit in the back of the helmet every year

Guys aren’t as savvy about concepts. Play the same offense and you understand what they’re trying to do. Also, some coaches argue that incompletions are more valuable bc of field position. Most INTs are downfield throws which already have a lower success rate so play their hands

Poor ball skills & too busy worrying abt a pre flag coming.

You can be a elite corner without the int the same season diggs lead the league in int he was the only corner to give up 1k yards QB’s weren’t scared to throw his way if a corner can lock up the number 1 to the point they take them completely out the game like that any day

@RSherman_25 QBs aren’t forcing passes as much. And receivers aren’t afraid of getting smacked no more.

This is why I praise @pick_six22 off corner play so much. It’s great to play tight press but the ball will rarely come your way if you’re great at it, which means no plays in ball will get to be made

They're coached by failed dentist, former teachers and non athletes. This is why ball skills aren't being taught because they have no clue on what they're doing.

Because 50 million check downs are now thrown per year.

i think to get alot of interceptions, you need to have the offenses figured out. i think the offenses are getting defensive players on their heels, of late. Qbs are not wanting to play like Brett Favre anymore, also. Lets be honest some qbs in woodson's day were helping them lol

Less picks because they don’t work on catching. Which is so surprising all 32 multi billion dollar NFL teams wont force DBs to work out with wide receiver coaches to learn how to catch in traffic

Qb play got way better the rules have extremely shifted in favor of WRS and WRs move around more to stay away from elite CBs

@ayroned I feel like Will Johnson is a ball hawk. Hopefully year 2 he snatches a few more because as much as he knows coverage, he’s looking for that ball.

Player now are more focused on trying to give up zero catches than they are to making plays on the ball

I’ve *NEVER* seen/heard/heard of Charles Woodson cursing!! He was serious about getting his hands on the rock, one of the best to ever do it. FUXK THEM HANDS!!

@esquireanthony1

@CalenBullock @kamari_lassiter @stingjr ARE BUILT DIFFERENTLY.

Folks didn’t get punched by their brothers when they dropped a pass and it shows.

Kyle Shanahan has changed the NFL and everyone is copying his BLUE PRINT These passes are all getting thrown towards the sidelines on diagonal routes. Throwing the ball and more of a straight line causes more interceptions.

Now when I say people don’t turn around for the ball idk what I’m talking about 🤣🤣 FUCK THEM HANDS!!!!

QBs are much more risk averse these days. QB statistics are far better than ever. QBs in the 90s had low completion %, and crazy high interceptions. Teams aren't willing to risk interceptions these days. QB play has improved dramatically the last 20 years

@RSherman_25 Sound like he saying they playing more safe going with just breaking or ending the play over getting the turnover
