One of the most brutal scenes in The Return of the King Extended Edition is Aragorn confronting Sauron through the palantír. On the surface, it almost plays like a fantasy trash-talk session between two enemies from opposite sides of the world. Aragorn reveals himself as Isildur's heir. He shows Sauron the reforged Sword of Elendil. No more hiding - he wants the Dark Lord to know that the bloodline that once brought him down has returned. It's an incredibly bold move. In one instant, the whole confrontation stops being about kingship, armies, swords, or prophecy. Sauron finds the one wound that actually matters and presses straight into it. That's what makes the scene land so hard. Aragorn shows up with legacy. Sauron answers with loss. The palantír isn't just a magic object here - it's psychological warfare. Andrei Tarkovsky on Ingmar Bergman's Shame (1968): "Let us look at Bergman's Shame. The film doesn't contain a single 'actor's piece' for the performer to 'give away' the director's purpose, to play the conception of the persona, his attitude to it, to assess it in relation to the overall idea; and the latter is entirely hidden within the dynamic of the characters' lives, at one with it. The people in the film are crushed by circumstances; they act only in accordance with their situation, to which they themselves are subordinate; they make no attempt to proffer us any idea, any perspective on what is happening, or to draw any conclusion. All of that is left to the film as a whole, to the director's vision. And how superbly it is accomplished! You cannot say in simple terms who amongst them is good or bad. I could never say that von Sydow is a bad man. They are all partly good and partly bad, each in his own way. No judgements are passed, because there is no hint of tendentiousness in any of the actors, and the circumstances of the film are used by the director to explore the human possibilities which they test, and not for a moment in order to illustrate a thesis. Max von Sydow's character is developed with masterly power. He is a very good man; a musician; kind and sensitive. It turns out that he is a coward. But by no means every bold man is a good human being, and cowards are not always scoundrels. Of course, he is weak and irresolute. His wife is far stronger than he, so much so that she can overcome her fear. The hero lacks that strength. He is tormented by his own weakness, vulnerability, lack of resilience; he tries to hide, to cower in a corner, not to see and not to hear; and he does this like a child, naively and with complete sincerity. But when circumstances nevertheless force him to defend himself, he instantly turns into a scoundrel. He loses all that was best in him; but the drama and absurdity of his situation is that as he is now he becomes necessary to his wife, who, in her turn, looks to him for protection and succour instead of despising him as she always had. When he beats her about the face and says 'Get out!' she goes crawling after him. There is something here of the age-old idea of passive good and active evil; but its expression is immensely complex. At the beginning of the film the hero cannot even kill a chicken, but as soon as he has found a way of defending himself he becomes a cruel cynic. He has something of Hamlet: my view is that the Prince of Denmark perishes not as a result of the duel, when he dies physically, but immediately after the 'rat' scene, when he understands how irreversible are those laws of life which have forced him, a man of humanity and intellect, to act like the inferior people who inhabit Elsinore. Von Sydow is now a sinister character, afraid of nothing: he kills; will not raise a finger to save his fellows; pursues only his own interests. The point is that you have to be a person of great integrity to feel fear in the face of the foul necessity to kill and humiliate. And by shedding that fear and apparently acquiring courage, a person in fact loses his spiritual strength and intellectual honesty and parts from his innocence. War is the obvious catalyst for the cruel, anti-human elements in people. I just finished watching the first episodes of No Tail to Tell on Netflix, and honestly, it already feels like the wildest rom com fantasy ride of the season. From its first moments, you can tell this isn’t your typical love story. It’s a blend of folklore, modern life, and chaotic fate that hooks you quickly and keeps you curious. At the center of it all is Eun‑ho (played by Kim Hye‑yoon), a 900 year old gumiho, a nine tailed fox being who has lived for centuries and absolutely refuses to become human. She’s mischievous, sharp tongued, self serving, and emotionally guarded, having spent her long existence gaming the balance between good and bad deeds so she never loses her immortality. She’s a gumiho I have always wanted, with bite, sass, and style. Then fate and literal chaos intervene. A strange accident involving Kang Si‑yeol (Lomon), a world class soccer star known for his confidence, discipline, and narcissism, flips everything on its head. For the past week, we’ve been sharing tears, heartbreak, and beautiful memories of Danya’s one-of-a-kind character. It feels wrong to continue with everyday life after losing one of the brightest and kindest souls in the chess world. Danya was one of the most humble and brilliant players I’ve ever met — a rare genius who would never admit he was one. He wasn’t just one of the best chess teachers online but also one of the strongest blitz players in the world. Once, after streaming for seven and a half hours, I told Danya he could cancel our lesson if he was tired. He kindly declined and shared his excitement for the special games he prepared. He loved teaching his friends and family and never expected anything in return. He had an incredible sense of humor and no ego. In the second slide, you can see him playing a simul against the three of us — witty as ever, multitasking, and still crushing all of us. He was always an amazing sport and made every game fun, even though his skill level was far beyond ours. We’d play odds matches where he had 45 seconds vs 3 minutes, trying to “adopt” my sister and I (winning ten games in a row.) We’d add embarrassing punishments, but he never complained. He’d just laugh it off and say, “Please, Alexandra, just don’t make me dance again.” Danya brought as much laughter to the world as he did love and passion for chess. He dedicated his life to the game. It’s impossible to comprehend the pain and pressure he faced from the absurd cheating accusations — yet he carried himself with honor, respect, and integrity. He played with five cameras, went live on Russian TV, and accepted unfair conditions just to prove his honesty. Despite it all, he delivered some of the strongest performances of his career. “A Wizard Is Never Late” In the scene where Gandalf meets Frodo in the Shire, Frodo teases him for being late. Gandalf replies: “A wizard is never late, Frodo Baggins. Nor is he early.” He then concludes that a wizard always arrives at precisely the time he means to. At first glance, this is simply a humorous remark, perfectly in keeping with Gandalf’s character. But when I place it alongside his other words throughout The Lord of the Rings, I feel that the line opens up a deeper way of looking at the character. Gandalf is not someone who knows the entire future in advance. But he is aware that he is carrying out a mission greater than himself, and that what happens in Middle-earth does not lie entirely within the control of any individual. So the question I want to ask is: when Gandalf says that he is neither late nor early, but arrives at the right time, what does “the right time” actually mean to him? Other forces are at work One of the lines that draws my attention most is what Gandalf says about Bilbo finding the Ring. In the novel, Gandalf says: “Behind that there was something else at work, beyond any design of the Ring-maker. I can put it no plainer than by saying that Bilbo was meant to find the Ring, and not by its maker. In which case you also were meant to have it.” I am especially struck by the phrase: “was meant to.” Bilbo was meant to find the Ring. And if that was so, Frodo was also meant to have it. What is interesting is that Gandalf does not explain the Ring coming into Bilbo’s possession simply as an accident. He senses that something lies behind the event, something beyond the intention of the very maker of the Ring. In the film, this idea is expressed more briefly. This becomes even clearer after his confrontation with the Balrog. In the novel, Gandalf says: “Naked I was sent back — for a brief time, until my task is done.” The important words here are: “sent back.” He was sent back. And he returned: “until my task is done.” Gandalf did not decide for himself to return. He was sent back and continued his task. I do not want to take this line too far by claiming that Gandalf knew the exact details of the entire plan behind his return. What we can say more confidently is that Gandalf himself understands his return as having been sent back so that he may continue and complete his task. #zhanglinghe 🔥 #Overdo 🎬 murong qingyi instantly became my favorite character out of all the roles that zhang linghe ever played, and one of the most well developed & complete character he ever portrayed. we get to witness every important stage of his life. we meet his pure personality when he still became a doctor in beiping. then three years ahead, after his released from prison, bitterness and resentment have begun to take root and we see how it affect his personality too. finally, six years later, we see him carrying a far greater responsibility as the principal of the aviation school, determined to carry on his big brother's legacy. murong qingyi is such a layered character that he gives zhang linghe plenty of room to explore, grow, and challenge himself as an actor. the role didn't just allow us to see his ability to create chemistry with so little romantic part, but also his ability to portray complex emotional conflicts and compelling dynamics with other characters around murong qingyi. from quiet moments of vulnerability to intense confrontations, he convincingly captured every stage of murong qingyi's emotional journey. I've watched all of zhang linghe's dramas, and I genuinely think this is his best performance to date. this drama is not a perfect one, but it has undoubtedly given zhang linghe the opportunity to showcase his acting range and prove that he's far more than just a "pretty face." from romantic scenes to heavy emotional scenes and also the fighting scenes, he can portray it very well.
