I remember something like this in the UK, back in the early 80s when poi was doing my A Levels and there was a lot of interest in learning Russian as the Soviet Union was changing.

There was once a halcyon time (in the 60s) when the BBC made radio courses in basic Russian available. Long before the BBC became merely a woke propaganda war-hog extension of the government.
