This fire siege was predicted, but the scale of devastation is pretty shocking. In the coming days, a lot of people are going to try and fill the void with outrage "why didn't they do this?!?" "why isn't this politician here?" Everyone's gonna try to find the *one* thing that caused this devastation. None of that stuff really matters. Firestorms happen out West. I've been in a lot of them. Wildfire is never just *one* thing...it's a lot of things coming together like tumblers in a lock. People need to harden their homes, remove their own brush, learn about fire behavior so they know when and how to evacuate properly, the state and the feds need to do a lot more RX burning, backup systems need to be established for hydrants, we need more wildland firefighters and to pay them better so they stay.... No one politician caused it, no one politician will fix it. No amount of Teslas will make the fires go away. No fire hydrant would've made all the difference....dude...fires in these winds are absolutely unstoppable. Living in fire country requires personal and community responsibility, and that's a hard pill to swallow...but SoCal is fire country. Malibu burns religiously. Always has, always will. Let's mourn the losses, help our neighbors pick up the pieces, and be intelligent with how and where we choose to live. We don't build in flood planes. We never seem to question why we build in fire alley. Instead, we just want to blame some politician or some bureaucratic slip-up, and that gets everyone engagement $$ on twitter, so it spreads as badly as the wildfires themselves. A lot of us just lost all our childhood memories in the Palisades, many lost pets and homes...I know people are mad and want a scapegoat, but seeing all the clickbait is just gross and disheartening. Stop hunting for rage fodder and just support the people who got hurt. Bad things happen in God's world...these things are not meant to punish us...they're meant to shape and reveal our character.
