Let’s not forget who we’re fighting and what their priorities are. Hamas is a self-proclaimed culture of death and martyrdom, which leaders openly demand martyrs for “the cause”.

After all the scandals and exposed lies, I don't know how you still have the dignity to appear in public again. Oh, wait, I remember now. You're a settler and an occupier, so you don't have dignity in the first place, and lying is your hobby.

"Palestine is not engaged in a holy war; it is a decolonial freedom struggle. Palestinians did not choose Jewish people to colonise their land, and they have a moral and legal right to resist occupation, regardless of who the occupier is. Jewish safety is a non-starter, so long as the violent occupation of Palestine persists. Our liberation is bound together as one." —— Amanda Gelender

Hezbollah's deputy commander, Naim Qassem, describes the potency of “martyrdom” culture and how it’s effective as a political and operational tool. Hamas in Gaza would not be politically, tactically, and militarily what it is today without the massive material and ideological (despite their religious differences) support of the Islamic Republic of Iran (IRI). Hezbollah in Lebanon began its significant activities in the early 1980s with IRI support to challenge the United States and Israel, starting a new strain of violent Islamism that persists to the present. There are essentially three kinds of violent Islamists: (1) Sunni Muslim Brotherhood types to which Hamas and Sayyid Qutb belong; (2) Sunni Salafi/Jihadi types to which al-Qaeda/Bin Laden and ISIS belong; (3) Shia/Islamic Revolution-inspired types like the IRI’s Mullahs & IRGC; Hezbollah, Iraqi/Syrian militias, and Yemen’s Houthis. What Hamas has done to Gaza is turn the entire coastal enclave into a “martyrdom” project, in which civilians are told that death isn’t so bad since martyrs go straight to heaven without “hessab” or “questioning by Allah” and that loving death is the trait of a devout Muslim, unlike loving life which is the trait of Jews and non-believers. Some might scoff at these notions and dismiss them as religious nihilism. However, these are powerful sentiments that Hamas integrates into how it fights and carries out its operations, attacks, and political activities. The problem with “martyrs” isn’t just that they don’t fear death and are, therefore, powerful adversaries against the US or Israel. The main issue that’s incredibly, immensely harmful, and damaging is that “martyrs” usually require extensive infrastructure to operate and conduct their operations. Suicide bombers or warriors who don’t fear death usually have families, communities, and societies that they damage and harm when carrying out their activities. They might not fear death, but when doing their deeds, they bring death and destruction upon their people, who have to face the consequences of their violent acts. This is why Hamas (and other Islamists) show little to no regard for what happens to their people, cities, and nations as a result of firing rockets from civilian areas and don’t care about IDF retaliation/retribution/counter-strikes which kill so many innocent and uninvolved people. The glorification of martyrs by media and segments of society exacerbates this problem. For example, Aljazeera Arabic refers to Palestinians killed by IDF attacks and fire as martyrs, while it refers to Lebanese, Syrians, and others as merely being killed. The Islamic Republic of Iran has been an exceptionally harmful and nefarious player that has worsened the Israel and Palestine conflict and promoted further bloodshed by adding a religious component to martyrdom culture. While the PLO and other Palestinians had the concept of “Fedayeen” who sacrificed themselves for a larger campaign/cause, Islamists took this concept and elevated it to new levels that normalized the death of civilians as a type of collateral damage that’s inevitable, telling people it’s ok to be “martyred” since one goes straight to heaven. This clip is from a three-part DW News documentary about Hezbollah that I highly recommend watching. Link to full video below.
