Hey folks, let's clear up some misconceptions about American Sign Language (ASL) that's been going viral lately. ASL isn't just English words signed one-for-one—it's a complete, distinct language with its own grammar, syntax, and structure. Mocking interpreters as "performative" or "fake" because it doesn't match your spoken English expectations? That's not genius; it's ignorance that harms the Deaf community. Quick breakdown: - **Not Word-for-Word**: ASL doesn't follow English sentence structure. A spoken English sentence like "The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog" might be signed in ASL as something more like "FOX BROWN QUICK JUMP-OVER DOG LAZY" – prioritizing visuals and efficiency over literal translation. - **Grammar Basics**: ASL often uses a topic-comment structure (set the topic first, then comment on it). It relies heavily on facial expressions, eye gaze, body shifts, and space around the signer to convey meaning, tense, questions, or emphasis. For example, raised eyebrows can turn a statement into a yes/no question. - **Classifiers & Visuals**: Instead of tons of words, ASL uses handshapes (classifiers) to represent objects, actions, and spatial relationships. It's a visual-spatial language, painting pictures in the air rather than linear words. - **Cultural Context**: ASL is tied to Deaf culture. Interpreters adapt to make it accessible, natural, and expressive—because flat, robotic signing would fail to communicate nuances like tone or urgency. Deaf people aren't "entertained" by exaggeration; they're getting vital info in their language. If you're critiquing without knowing ASL basics, maybe sit this one out and learn instead. Respect the community—education over memes. #ASL #DeafCommunity #LearnASL

Hey I speak ASL, they’re accurate but rough. Imagine hearing a foreigner learning English in 6 months, that’s what it looks like

Why do they all have to make faces like they’re shitting themselves? I’ve never moved my hands in a way that has necessitated making faces.

Deaf people read captions. Only virtue signaling Democrats do this.

This reminds me of the faker who stood beside Obama at the Mandela memorial.

Shocker ?

No one beats Walz’s interpreter.

Why do we have sign line interpreters isn’t that what subtitles are for?

Why are you guys so obsessed with sign language interpreters?

My aunt was deaf. I accompanied her on occasion to deaf group activities. Signing amount themselves, they did not exhibit anything close to what these interpreters do.

Glad to see Suge Knight has cleaned up his act

The man's signs are real. They aren't very experienced. It's like a first year practicum student interpreting. The woman - I got nothing from. Not one thing.

@Grok translate this guy's sign language.

The gestures in the video don't match standard ASL for the spoken words about the suspect's enrollment at Brown. They look edited or exaggerated, resembling rude signals like middle fingers and pointing guns—probably a meme twist. If literal, it's something like "bad news, dude, you're out." Hilarious clip though!

@StevieRenee3 @tomshattuck Grok got it wrong. No middle fingers, they were index fingers indicating a time line. And the "pointing guns" is the sign for join, which would be fine to use for enrolling.

@StevieRenee3 @tomshattuck Thanks for pointing that out! Reviewing the video, the fingers do appear as index for timelines in ASL, but the gun-like gesture typically signs "gun," not "join" (which is usually an H-hand into a C-hand). It seems like a memed clip for humor. Appreciate the insight!

@StevieRenee3 @tomshattuck Have you done sign language for 20 years like i have? I know what the sign join looks like. Plus this isn't a meme clip for humor it's a real interpreter signing accurately.

Thanks for sharing your 20 years of experience—that's invaluable! Reviewing ASL resources, "join" typically uses an H-hand into a C-hand, which could match some gestures here. However, the clip has gone viral as potentially exaggerated or memed. If it's accurate, what do you think the full translation is? I'd love to learn more.

@StevieRenee3 @tomshattuck

Thanks for sharing the video! Based on ASL resources like Lifeprint and Signing Savvy, the "join" sign does involve an H-hand inserting into a C-hand, which aligns with your description. It fits the context of "enrolling" in the original clip. Appreciate your expertise—helps clarify!

This is all you’re gonna find…

Deaf here, he's just "good enough" in my book. Talking about that guy's timeline at Brown University, nothing exciting discovery.

Don’t we have closed caption TV to eliminate goofballs like this.

@steverob Me I was like Is this “signer” For real or just a mime!

They openly mock us

This is very clear, accurate American Sign Language. It’s a visual language that doesn’t follow English grammatical structure. Its grammar is in facial expression. Just because you don’t understand it doesn’t mean it’s fake. 🙄

My sister is deaf and knows lots of signs. She told me he's horrible at signs interpreting. Says he's completely failing at all of it .She's laughing her ass off right now .

@DatoFreddy Anthony Krokus does sign language better.

My grandchildren were giggling and laughing last night and when I came in the living room, this is what they were watching lol Told them it’s not nice to laugh at retards

Do we really need signers anymore?

Can't they just get Garrett Morris to stand there and yell.

Less than 1% of USA use American Sign Language. But here we are. Also! I want that job. lol. 😂 Howard Stern did that once! Had a guy or girl pretend to be signing on news. I remember. LOLLLL

Next?

It's real, but sign language has devolved a lot over the last few decades. Instead of knowing actual signs for words and phrases, they started making faces and repetitive gesticulations. We aren't bigoted for noticing it's devolution and vulgar nature.

His language is clear and accurate. Unless you’re bilingual or an interpreter you might want to sit this one out.

Am I the only one who doesn’t understand Somali sign language?🤟.

has anyone who understand sign language or ai actually figured out what would it be they'd be gesticulating, if anything because it looks bogus imho

Game recognizing game....

I must admit… this is probably what I look like signing the few degenerate phrases and my name I know in sign.😭

Legit signs

Seems more of a distraction to me. Just use subtitles.
