NECO is mainly a national school-leaving examination, while IELTS is an international English proficiency test. Is this confusion, or are people deliberately comparing two different things?

Before comparing NECO with IELTS, ask yourself: how many countries require NECO the way they require IELTS? That alone should tell you they serve different purposes.

Many adults write IELTS because they are working, migrating, or pursuing further studies and can often pay for it themselves. WAEC and NECO candidates are mostly secondary school students who still depend on their parents or guardians to pay. That difference alone should tell us these are not comparable examinations.

It’s not even a confidence v evidence issue. Other facts you stated aside, the basis of cost conversations should be earnings. Let’s assume Brits are required to take IELTS as entry into uni, that’s <20% of min wage. How do you justify requesting 71% of min wage for WAEC?
