Liberals and conservatives should be able to disagree without treating each other like enemies. But too many people throw an insult, walk away and pretend they won. That isn’t debate. That’s avoiding it. When insults replace respectful discussion, we’ve lost the plot.

I’ve been warned to “step back” from discussing the issue of banning of kirpans in the UK. More concerningly, I’ve been told that some people who carry kirpans may also have guns. If that statement is intended as a threat, it is completely unacceptable. Public policy issues should be debated through facts, evidence, and respectful discussion not intimidation. People should be able to express their views on laws and public safety without fear of being threatened. I will continue to support open, lawful, and respectful debate on this issue.

Being proud to be British should not be controversial. Wanting safer communities, better opportunities, respect, fairness and a country that feels united again does not make someone a bad person. A lot of ordinary people feel like they’re constantly being ignored, mocked or shouted down whenever they express concerns about the direction Britain is heading in. People want to be heard.
