It's due to total internal reflection. Glass is denser than air and has a higher refractive index. When light propagates in a glass tube and hits its surface at a small enough angle, it gets reflected back into glass, even though both glass and air are transparent for light.

This effect is called total internal reflection. This is why we can use optical glass fibers to send information encoded in modulated light over thousands of kilometers. This effect is also used in binoculars and many other optical instruments and devices.

It always amazes me how MIT professors teach to the students at the University all the stuff we learn in Europe at elementary school from physics, grade 6.

If the light were truly "trapped" inside, then you wouldn't be able to see it, would you?
