The Drakensberg mountain range is the source of the biggest rivers in South Africa, the uThukela River also known as Tugela, following east to the Indian Ocean, and the Orange River flowing west to the Atlantic Ocean and the West Coast. Both rivers have their source within a few kilometres of each other at the top of the escarpment in Lesotho. The uThukela River, while it naturally flows eastwards through KZN, is actually one of the primary sources of water for the Gauteng region through an interbasin transfer that pumps water up over the escarpment from Woodstock Dam to Sterkfontein Dam and then through other Vaal River that feeds into Gauteng’s water supply. The river falls into South Africa at the majestic Tugela Falls in the Royal Natal National Park and then flows through the Amazizi community into Woodstock dam, where it’s met by the Mnweni river tributary. The famous Amphitheatre, Tugela Falls has become one of the well sought after adventure routes. Declared in August 2021 by the World Waterfall Barometer, this hike will take you approximately 7 hours. It’s strenuos and has 2 chain ladders that are side by side, used to climb up the mountain. Drive to the Sentinel Car Park , after approximately 3 hours of climbing, hikers can be on top of the rugged basalt mountain, taking in the magnificent, breathtaking landscapes and visiting the top of the Falls. This should be in every hiker’s bucket list. It’s ideal to visit around summer when the waterfall is visible. #LetsGoWild #DrakensbergSummer
