I think the problem is less who is playing Mamdani, cause Mamdani and Ramy are also personal friends and Mamdani also was ecstatic when Ramy played him the first time after the mayoral debate. It's mainly the writing which tbf also is just a general problem SNL US has.

I think the impression could work if the writing was better. Ramy is a very smiley, jubilant guy like Mamdani. SNL impressions are meant to be flanderized but the writing has to fully sell. They know how to write Trump, but think Zohrans just a hip social media-savvy politician.
