Zakariya Mahamed, 28, was caught on CCTV following the officer across a prison wing before suddenly attacking him, repeatedly striking him around the head and neck. The officer, who is in his 30s, suffered significant injuries and required medical treatment. Mahamed was found guilty of Section 18 wounding with intent following a six-day trial at Northampton Crown Court. He was cleared of the more serious charge of attempted murder. The court nevertheless deemed Mahamed dangerous enough to receive an extended sentence of six years and six months in prison, followed by a further two years and six months on licence. Mahamed was already serving a five-year-and-three-month sentence for robbery after threatening a victim with a knife and demanding money. He was due to be released in March 2026 but remained behind bars awaiting trial for the prison attack.
