"Linux is Built by Volunteers" is a Myth For most modern Kernel releases, over 80% of commits come from people paid to do the work.

Exactly! The bigger myth is that open source volunteerism is enough to create all that people need in the computing world. The reality, not even close.

Please be more kind to the paid devs from hyperscales such as Meta pushing things like systemd while blocking what the average desktop user would actually benefit from. 😭

Lunduke acting like he’s cracked open a conspiracy by discovering that corps pay for kernel development is hilarious. He treats basic, decades-old enterprise open-source economics like a shocking exposé, completely ignoring that everyone else moved past this revelation ages ago.

I really enjoy your take on this. Your nice, slow and calm explanation of facts drives the lunatic left mad. They've tried to appropriate Linux ( like they appropriated the Rainbow ) , they haven't because you and me and millions of others ignore them and go on about our business. The lunatic lefty He-She's just crave attention. They base their existence on attention and this methodical explanation of facts makes their skin crawl. They've already lost and society is rocketing beyond them and will never stop. Keep it up, my friend!

As a guy who worked for Oracle Operating Systems and Virtualization organizations for many years, I can confirm.

"Linux" and "the kernel" are two different things. Just sayin'

YES. The bulk of the volunteers in #FreeBSD work on maintaining the ports collection, which can be as simple as small updates to three files and may be mostly automated.

In principle, this isn't really a bad thing. It just means Linux is more the product of a traditional co-op; it's those that invest and work on the product are also its users.

idk, there's a lot of people in the wings who don't get a slice of the pie.

Totally true. I really don’t know why people insist on the contrary.

Now a days sure, it started with volunteers, and now AI will substitute these "paid" employees....

Linux is the most widespread operating system, globally – but how is it built? Few people are better to answer this than Greg Kroah-Hartman (Greg K-H): Greg has been a Linux kernel maintainer for 25 years, and one of the 3 Linux Kernel Foundation Fellows (the other two are Linus Torvalds and Shuah Khan). Greg manages the Linux kernel’s stable releases, and is a maintainer of multiple kernel subsystems. We cover the inner workings of Linux kernel development, exploring everything from how changes get implemented to why its community-driven approach produces such reliable software. Greg shares insights about the kernel's unique trust model and makes a case for why engineers should contribute to open-source projects. Watch or listen: • YouTube: • Spotify: • Apple: Brought to you buy: • WorkOS — The modern identity platform for B2B SaaS. • Vanta — Automate compliance and simplify security with Vanta. Check out all of our current sponsor and their offerings: ---- One of the most surprising things I learned about Linux: although 4,000 developers contribute to the project from 500 companies per year, and has around 800 kernel maintainers, the project is run with email, git... and that's about it! No dedicated project managers, no regular meetings across the group. It's a truly fascinating and unique model (and only applies to the Linux kernel project: not to Linux distributions.) We go into more detail about this topic with Greg in the podcast as well.
