Nearly 3 years ago, my daughter was diagnosed with a rare form of renal cell carcinoma when she was 21 years old. She is literally having her follow-up scans done today...and I know she echos this sentiment! We're not promised tomorrow, so live for today!

Almost losing my life saved my life Health decline woke me up She is spot on about this! We take the smallest of things for granted until they are taken from us People do not realize how blessed they are Every moment of life is a gift

Last year, I was feeling a bit tired so had a blood test which showed I was bit anemic The doctor was pretty low key about it and said I should have a CT scan 'just in case' won't be anything but should try to find out why I was a bit anaemic I had the CT scan and saw the haematologist who told me the scan showed something in my liver and he was concerned about a thickening of my bowel - still a bit low key, still just 'checking' at this point but I was a bit surprised with this result I was then booked for an MRI to get a more detailed view of my liver and I was also booked for a colonoscopy Had the colonoscopy and my GI doctor told me there were no issues, which was a relief I had the results of my liver scan, and was told there I had a large tumour about 8cm x 10cm My GI doctor told me liver cancer was very rare unless you have a damaged liver and it's usually a secondary site if it is cancer. So I was booked for a PET scan to make sure there was no cancer anywhere else in my body that might explain the tumour I went back for those results, no second site but the doctor was unable to tell if the tumour was benign or cancerous from the scans The tumour had to be removed. Given its size it could cause a bleed or turn cancerous if it wasn't already I chose to schedule surgery rather than have a biopsy then surgery This was all happening over the course of about 5 months My surgery was booked for about 6 weeks after my PET scan and I would get confirmation of whether I needed chemotherapy about 5 weeks after that once the tumour had been thoroughly tested I had 60% of my liver removed was in hospital for 8 days, 4 days spent in ICU Eventually I got my results and the tumour was pre-cancerous Through all that time there was a real possibility I was going to be told I had liver cancer and once in a while I did get afraid Waiting for my PET scan results and waiting for the test on my liver tumor was difficult and I cried with relief at my final test result I had 6 weeks off work and the hospital stay and recovery were tough but there has also been a massive reset in my thinking When I was in hospital feeling at my worst I shared a room with a woman who had pancreatic cancer and had been in hospital for 2 months having surgeries and treatment and still had a way to go The other woman on my ward was under palliative care and was getting her care package before she left to travel to Italy for the last time before she died She was so kind and thoughtful and offered to wash my hair for me as I was struggling to look after myself People really do need to stop once in a while and put things into perspective. We all don't know what could happen and just how lucky we are
