What no one knew was that both parents were experiencing profound, parallel psychological distress, believing God was directly commanding them to complete "tasks" to prove their faith. When she failed, Marcus felt his own faith wasn't strong enough. He walked back to the lake alone to attempt a swim to a distant sandbar to prove his devotion. Tragically, he drowned.
