75% of the class built the exact same bridge

Does no one know how to do arches anymore?

This is what you get when you pay for a woman engineer. They OVER CHARGE and OVER ENGINEER because they're too afraid to sign off on whatever it is they are paid to do and the shit fails anyways. Those bridges were horrendous.

I actually won a competition for this in middleschool building a arched suspension support bridge like golden gate bridge and the disqualified me cause they said it was cheating lol

Aren't they supposed to be good at building bridges? They're studying for it and they all suck

Is there a reason none of them put supports in the center

para que sea "física" debe argumentarse con cálculos.. De lo contrario son bebés jugando con palitos

We'd have to see the design constraints the students were given to understand why so many are trying forms that obviously won't work. With all the design tools & info sources today- this should be easy. Back in the day we had to manually calculate forces at every node.

guess they never heard of an arch ...smh

I did something similar at Engineering School. The exercise teaches you that there are lot of ways you can get it right, and a lot of ways you can get it wrong, and making a sloppy job of doing it the right way is also bad.

I did something similar in the Science Olympiad with balsa wood towers.

Building to specs, in this case the exact dimensions of the package was the key. No load on the middle

To be fair, the bridge is being constructed of materials that have a collective weight capacity that is lower than these books. There are total weight capacities for bridges, respective to the foundation and material. Proportionally, many would have held other materials.

Are they all stupid, or have they never seen a bridge in their life?

This is frustrating. Was there no class discussion first? No exploring a few design principles? All that effort for everyone to fail.

When I was in school we made bridges out of balsa wood.
