Regardless of the genre, my favorite games are those that are easy to learn but hard to master. In other words, it takes you 2 minutes to understand the objective but the skill ceiling is quite high. An absolutely timeless gem is Sokoban (published in 1982), a game that fascinates me to this day. The graphics and sounds are sub-par at best, but gameplay is HIGHLY addictive. The idea is to move boxes/crates around in order to get them to their final destination without blocking the way for the "Sokoban" (Japanese word for storage worker/manager) or other boxes. Sounds super simple in theory but requires a lot of abstract thinking and planning ahead, especially in the later stages when the levels become more complex, when you can easily created deadlocks. You can only push the crates, you can't pull them, so one wrong move could spell disaster... Sokoban was developed in a solo effort by Hiroyuki Imabayashi and it exists for pretty much every system today, including endless cloness. You could call it the godfather of puzzle games.

Robert De Niro originally wanted to play Max Cherry in Jackie Brown, the role that eventually went to Robert Forster. However, Quentin Tarantino had written the role with Forster in mind and had already promised him the part. Tarantino explains… “I wrote Jackie Brown, and I decided at some point in writing the script that Robert Forster would be terrific as Max Cherry. So, while I’m still writing the script, I bump into Robert Forster - we go to the same coffee shop. ….so I decided I’m gonna give him the part, because I figure, look, this would be a big, big deal part. So if I don’t give him the part, then once I’m done with it and it gets out in the town, then it’s gonna be Gene Hackman and Paul Newman and people like that, and it would be pretty hard to say no to. But if I just give him the part right now, I’ve got the juice to get it through, and now I can’t take it back because I wouldn’t be a man of my word. So to lock myself into that decision, I give it to him before I finish writing it. And then now comes the time to do it. Robert De Niro reads it, and he wants to be in it, but he wants to play Max. If I had to choose just one game (and no other ever again) to play for the rest of my life, I'd go with Civilization (MicroProse, 1991). You can argue some sequels were better (I can't deny that), but the "wow" effect from first playing it in 1991 was so huge it holds a special place in my heart. For a 1991 game, the graphics are pretty good, the sound fits perfectly (rather soothing!), gameplay is complex and variable, and replay value is gigantic. To me, Civilization is as close to perfection as a game can be. That's my pick. What's yours?

One of the toughest games I played as a kid was Aztec Challenge on the Commodore 64 (1983). My friend had it, and we played it nonstop until the disk was basically worn out. His dad used to brag that you fight a Pharaoh at the very end. We believed him because we never got that far! Turns out there was no Pharaoh, it was just a fun story to impress us kids. Back then, I wasn't aware that most 80s games didn’t really "end." They just looped back to the start after the last level. But at the time we never reached the end, and I'd be surprised if more than 1% did. It was one of the first games I played, and it made me rage-quit a lot. The levels looked simple, but they were brutally hard. You needed crazy fast reflexes to survive. That horrible piranha death sound still gives me flashbacks!

Giannis was asked about the 65-game rule for regular-season awards: "I'll be honest with you. Through 13 years of being in the league I think I've played 65 games every year. I'm still going to try. I think I'm still going to play 65 games, but it's hard. If you want to be a really good player, help your team get deep in the playoffs, and then come back at it and play 65 games again. I've been All-NBA the last 9 years in a row— 7 times first team. It's hard to be consistent. Just putting that rule there, it doesn't give you a break. The margin of error is hard, like you get one injury and you're off the race. I might not make it. Jokic might not make it. LeBron's not going to make it. Wemby might not make it. "I was all for it because it could benefit me at first but as I get older I'm like 'ah take it off, take it off', but these are the rules and you just gotta play by the rules. Who's going to be available, just Shai? So it's up in the air."

🐹The next concert in the Netherlands will be my last stop. I just wanted to say thank you for giving me such a beautiful memory before the final show. A long time ago, at some concert, one of the members asked the audience to turn on their phone flashlights. Back then, I honestly didn’t get it as I’m not a very sentimental person so I wondered ‘Why do they do that?’ But seeing it today, I felt it was just so beautiful. Ofc, I've always thought it was a pretty scene whenever I saw it, not just that it was pretty today. But the difference is that I kind of expected it when I saw it in the past. And today, I recevied something unexpected. There’s something different about the way a surprise event made me feel. Starting with that ‘London Princess’ thing earlier, there have been so many touching events you've prepared for me today. I’m leaving truly moved. You showed me how powerful a surprise event can be. It’s designed to get 3 yards, and he might turn it up and get more. And the last, like, five times I’ve called it, he’s bypassed Juszczyk and tried to go for a deeper one. So we’ve been giving him crap for a long time that he can’t hit a guy in the flat quickly. And then he did it, and I said that just to piss him off, so he could flip me off, kind of subtly. But it was awesome. He was too far away, but I know he’s rolling his eyes. That was cool, though. I’m glad he did it, and sometimes when you piss guys off, they do it more. Never bet against an autistic guy working on his special interest. It took me a solid six months, but I finally got my Tempest AI to play the game at a "master" level. By that I mean it can start at level 1, play to level 99, and keep going, all on "hard" game difficulty. It can't play indefinitely yet, but I'm working on it! Here's a video of it playing through level 96, the hardest level in Tempest! You can monitor the live training here:

Are men drawn to video games because they offer a space where merit is recognized and rewarded? Maybe. But recognized by who? The game itself? Other players? I’m not totally convinced. A lot of them are designed so that the difficulty is just above your current skill level. You usually fail the first couple of times, but you almost succeed. And then you try again. The game subtly adjusts itself to stay just out of reach—close enough to feel attainable, far enough to keep you chasing it. It’s addictive. And when you finally beat the level or complete the quest, it triggers a real sense of satisfaction—like you earned it. I’ve talked to some younger guys who got hooked on gaming and then had this realization: “I should be doing this in real life.” Instead of trying to level up in a game, they started trying to level up in the gym. Same principle. You lift today, stick with it, lift a little more next month, and so on. Eventually your body changes. Two years go by, and you look like a different person. Take that mindset, the drive to improve, to reach the next level, and apply it outside the screen. There are levels to real-life too.

hyunjin said when he was struggling to breathe properly and even speaking felt hard at that time, seungmin took time out of his own schedule to teach hyunjin 🥟: learning from you made feel both proud and grateful. it made me think “i really want to do well” 🐶: seeing all the knowledge i've gathered from everywhere and how it actually clicked when i explained to you made me proud and happy 🐶: so don't ever feel burdened by that. i always say that. but i get the feeling that you still find it hard sometimes. but that's not the case at all. i actually love it when i reach out to someone for things like that

I grew up with the C64 (early 80s) as so many of you here. My very first game ever, the one that my brother and I played to death, was Falcon Patrol (1983) designed by Steve Lee. If there is one sound I will remember until my final days, it will be the refueling sound of the jet. What was your first computer and the very first game you played on it?
