As we approach the nation's 250th birthday, PBS News is looking at some notable, but lesser-known, people and moments in American military history. Of the more than 350,000 Black U.S. service members who served in World War I, 89% were assigned to labor support units due to discrimination. But one segregated infantry regiment came out of the war highly decorated and renowned: the 369th Infantry Regiment, known as the "Harlem Hellfighters." PBS News' Cecilia Lallmann explores the regiment’s storied legacy, from its beginnings as New York State’s first all-Black National Guard unit to its historic achievements during World War I. Nearly 200 pieces of New Deal-era artwork, once on display in our nation’s post offices, are missing or significantly damaged. A part of then-President Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s push to raise America’s stature on the global art stage and provide employment amidst the Great Depression, nearly 1,700 murals hung in U.S. post offices. But over time, and as the U.S. Postal Service faced serious financial challenges, some of the art has vanished, been painted over or is unaccounted for. That’s according to new reporting from the Washington Post’s Jacob Bogage. PBS News’ Geoff Bennett (Geoff Bennett) spoke with Bogage about this project and why efforts to preserve these pieces of American history haven’t materialized.

"He looked out in the audience and said, 'My own grandmother,' who raised him, 'would not be welcome in this audience, and I don't want to be doing this shtick anymore.' "That phenomenon often means that a huge amount of the national kind of energy in Democratic politics gets focused on a candidate running against a particularly heinous Republican, or a particularly charismatic Democratic candidate in a place that's extremely hard to win, and then completely skips an election that would have had huge consequences if it had gotten more attention," he told PBS News' Geoff Bennett.
