Today is John Cazale’s birthday. Every last individual on this website should know Cazale by name & should be familiar with his work. We lost Cazale at only 42. But in those 42 years, Cazale made magic: The Godfather, The Conversation, The Godfather Part II, Dog Day Afternoon, and The Deer Hunter. It was a run for the ages. I absolutely adore Cazale & I’m thankful for the work he left us. 🎂

John Cazale appeared in only five films, and all of them involved Al Pacino, Robert De Niro and/or Francis Ford Coppola. This, however, is the only Cazale film to involve all three. The Godfather: Part II (1974)

We’ve been so fortunate the last 40 years to watch Al Pacino & Robert De Niro’s careers unfold together. But it’s hard not to wonder: could John Cazale have made it a trio? When you see Cazale act next to Pacino or De Niro, it’s impossible to ignore where Cazale could’ve gone.

While filming this Russian Roulette scene between Robert De Niro & John Cazale in "The Deer Hunter" (1978), De Niro, being a method actor, told Michael Cimino that he could perform better in the scene if they put a real bullet in the gun. Cimino who was flabbergasted by the request, hinted to De Niro that it was dangerous and he had to ask Cazale. De Niro replied that Cimino could somehow rig it. When Cimino conveyed this weird request to Cazale, he didn't bat an eye. He just said, "I could go along with that". But while filming the scene, Cazale obsessively rechecked the gun before each take to be sure that the live round was not in the next chamber. "That was John Cazale" Cimino said, "He was just the sweetest guy. He was a sweetheart." ("Realizing The Deer Hunter: An Interview with Michael Cimino" & DVD commentary by director Michael Cimino and film critic F. X. Feeney) P.S: Remembering the legendary American actor, John Cazale on his 91st birthday!

Fredo still pisses me off every time I watch this scene. John Cazale gave the character so much life. Simply brilliant.

The late, great John Cazale (d. 1978) would’ve turned 91 today. Revere, Mass. native and BU's School of Fine Arts alum, he appeared in total of 5 films over 7 years. Each one was nominated for Best Picture. You may have heard of them : •The Godfather •The Godfather Part II •Dog Day Afternoon •The Deer Hunter •The Conversation “I Knew It Was You: Rediscovering John Cazale”(2009)
