From 1980 to 2000, solar activity was exceptionally strong, a period known as the modern solar maximum. But now, the sun is in decline. Next, we have the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation, or AMO, which measures sea surface temperatures in the North Atlantic. The AMO flips between warm and cool phases lasting 30 to 40 years each, with warm phases following spells of strong solar activity, and cool phases following periods of weak output. The AMO has been positive since the mid-1990s, lining up with the late 20th century solar maximum. But with the sun weakening, the AMO is now expected to turn negative again. Negative AMO phases bring colder winters across much of the Northern Hemisphere. The cold, snowy winters of the 1960s and 70s occurred during the last negative AMO. The sun is already weakening, the Atlantic will follow, as per the pattern. And when it does, folk should prepare for decades of harsher winters - the exact opposite of what governments are promising.
