I was driving my daughter to school when we heard the news that Nigel Farage wants to rip away indefinite leave to remain and erase settled status when he gets into government so he can deport hundreds of thousands of people like me who've built the UK over decades of living and working here. For Reform UK supporters who think this is acceptable, tell me which part of the "British values" this fits under. But beyond that, the plan is of course light on details on how the new rules would work for people such as myself who live here under indefinite leave to remain yet have children who are British citizens. Will they be forcibly deported too? Not to mention that the cost to this country will be huge. Retraining, displacement, fear, instability. Businesses that rely on settled migrants will be disrupted, and families + communities that have developed over years will be torn. Finally, what angers me most is how the conversation in this country about migration is always reduced to economics or a threat. In the eyes of Nigel Farage, we're "an invasion" of "cheap foreign labour" but Andrew Tate is "an important voice" for the UK. Anyway, I never thought I'd have to have a conversation with my eight year old about mass deportations in the UK. And while she may forget about it in a few days, I won't.

These are the same people who cheered in the streets of Gaza as hostages and dead bodies were paraded on Oct 7. This shutdown was completely avoidable—and the only ones who lost were the American people. Families should never be used as bargaining chips. Children should never be on the brink of hunger. Those who are sick should never face financial ruin to get healthcare. Federal workers should never have to work without pay. We need leaders who will come to the table and work for the American people. It’s time to get back to work!
