As the U.S. Marine Corps sundowns the AV-8B Harrier II after more than four decades of service, the legendary “jump jet” enters the final chapter of its operational life. With the Harrier now retired from U.S. service, the Harrier’s story is not completely over: the type remains in service only with Italy and Spain, where the unique STOVL aircraft continues to fly. To mark the USMC Harrier Sundown, here’s a 14-minute video that brings back one of my most memorable flying experiences: my flight aboard an Italian Navy TAV-8B Harrier. You can read more about that mission here: Unmistakable and iconic, the AV-8B remains one of the most fascinating combat aircraft ever built. This is my tribute to a legend that, for a little while longer, still refuses to disappear from the skies.

Back in black… on the flight deck. When the coolest guy in the parking lot shows up; it’s the US Navy flight deck crew. When you think you’re the coolest guy on the flight line… and then THESE guys show up. US Navy deck crew guiding an Osprey. Precision, teamwork, and swagger on another level. No CGI. No actors. Just elite Americans doing what they do. 🇺🇸 Who has the hardest job on an aircraft carrier — the pilots or the deck crew that makes it all happen? Who would like to take a ride in an Osprey?

Here's an interesting look at the Northrop X-4 Bantam, built in 1948 with no horizontal tail and depended on the wing control surfaces for roll and pitch attitudes. Very similar to the German Me 163. It failed mainly due to lack of a modernized flight control system.😎

As promised, here's some more Harrier footage. Here you get a rare look at the AV-8B and its replacement, the F-35B, flying together. We were joined by the Lightning II STOVL variant as we flew a left-handed racetrack pattern before heading to the ship (Cavour aircraft carrier).
