Louis CK made this joke/point a decade ago, but it's every bit as relevant today as it was then. Everything is amazing, yet you do nothing but complain about it. We are an utterly ungrateful species.

In before "religion fixes this". And yes, I've come around on that too. We probably do need a operating system for the mind where some of these practices are just baked in as good defaults through myths, traditions, and repetitions.

It's the builder's paradox. The same critical eye that allows us to see every imperfection and build amazing new things is the same eye that prevents us from ever being fully satisfied with the amazing things we already have. It's a feature of progress, not a bug of character.

I have mad respect for Louis C.K. as I can buy (and actually OWN) all the specials. The bundle is $30 and it couldn't be better spent. No streaming subscriptions and no torrents required.

"Go build your own." is a response I resort to often when I hear people complaining about a service or product. Don't be afraid to use it on your ungrateful friends and family.

AI writes code, makes art, answers questions, and drives cars. We respond: 'Why is this webpage taking 2 extra seconds to load?' We are not serious people.

"... Your life sucks around it..." I forgot how good this dude was. And I forgot that motherfuckers could cancel a person and everything that they are and that they made for being negligent for just a moment.

While it’s a terrible trait, it’s also the only way the human race adapts to new technologies and continues to strive for more. 100yrs ago not even the Queen of England had hot showers and now it’s the most normal thing in the world.

It's crazy how far apart the technology people use every day is from the average person's understanding of it.

I think we can be grateful and dissatisfied at the same time. A positive attitude transforms dissatisfaction into action - turns a consumer into a creator.

It’s because all this tech we have is built to manipulate us and make us more stressed! We get constant adds and political rhetoric. We need help to be better humans, those things make us worse. Deep down we know it.

In general I agree with you, but since the opportunities are not equally distributed I take some of complaining to be fair.

when i was a kid, in Portugal, we had no internet, the first place that had it was a very small cybercafé that had just opened, there was barely any websites to look at living before the internet and growing in the dawn of it was amazing, the age of yahoo and mIRC

Yeah but it’s deceptive to separate that from the whole - no improvement in society and interpersonal relationships, it all stagnated. Systems of democracy and government aren’t updated since Middle Ages. Marx warned that capitalism will collapse and nothing was done to prevent.

It's a failure of the human feedback loop. We are engineered to notice negative deltas (the wifi is slow) far more than positive absolutes (we have magical information beams in the air). Gratitude requires a conscious override of our default programming.

If everything is amazing and there is no complaint ever, people have no reason to keep making progress. It kind of sucks but complaints get people to actually reach for better things. Everything has a role. The "complain and do nothing" dichotomy is actually less terrible than you make it out to be.

On the other hand, contentment with the status quo kills progress. If no one had ever complained, we’d still be huddled around fires and dying in our forties. Innovation starts with discomfort.

To be fair usability is a dead concept in UI/UX design, especially on phones&websites, amazing as they may be. And, guess what, we need to use the damn things. A 15 year old PC is 1000x more usable. So, people rightly complain. OK consumption devices, poor creation devices.

Everything around us is an impossible miracle. We as software engineers are far too spoiled.

I used to be a big Louis CK fan.. Now whenever I listen to him all I can hear are nails scraping on the chalkboard ☹️. Maybe something from Steven Pinker could serve as a better alternative here. Don’t love cancel culture either but remain disappointed with Louis.
