Reminds me of that scene where Kor meets Dax again after 81 years apart, and now Dax is no long Curzon Dax, but Judzia Dax. She gently corrects him when he calls her Curzon, and he just rolls with it:

This clip ends too soon - as many people pointed out, Capt Stubing was just baiting Gopher to get him to confront his own prejudice.

There was no outrage, in part, because there was no social media encouraging outrage. If one person was offended, they were offended alone. Now you have the Evangelicals who see culture wars as a way to power.
