They were indeed phenomenal. Interesting to hear that Roberta Flack had to do some heavy handed pushing to get to Luther record his own solo album when he was a background singer for her, and Luther had to do the same with Lisa Fisher when she was background singer for him.

To be a Luther background singer ... it's almost like you had to be as good as Luther ...damn, that's a high bar

And they were sitting down when they did this! Love how he spotlighted them every concert!
