Closing the Shieldhall coffin factory and ripping more than 80 skilled manufacturing jobs out of Glasgow isn’t solidarity. It isn’t supporting communities. And it certainly isn’t ethical. Old timers hand-milling massive oak logs the old-school way… no power tools, just pure skill. 🪵 This 1978 footage from Germany is something else. These traditional carpenters in Kürten hoist the massive oak trunks up onto a towering trestle so they can hand-mill them — one man above and one below — using a long two-man crosscut saw. They slowly and steadily saw the logs lengthwise, milling perfect floorboards and beams for half-timbered houses. You can see the rhythm, the sweat, and the years of experience in every single stroke. No chainsaws, no electric sawmills — just hand tools, teamwork, and craftsmanship that used to be everyday life. It’s amazing how much patience and strength went into something we now take for granted. Makes me appreciate the old ways even more. ❤️
