Ukraine continues to do everything in its power to ensure that this war has the prospect of a diplomatic resolution. One of the key claims made by Ukraine’s opponents and by those who trust dubious sources is that we in Ukraine supposedly want the war to continue. Your task is to consistently, persuasively, and credibly reject this accusation. It is Ukraine that wants peace. Ukraine has never wanted this war – not for a single day. It is Russia that is doing everything possible to prolong the war and inflict as much damage on human life as it can. We are working toward diplomacy. All leaders who can help know that we are ready for every substantive format. Putin is not ready. And that is precisely the problem. And for there to be a diplomatic path, there must be no obstacles to it in any influential capital in the world. When Moscow does not want peace, Washington and Beijing can make it want peace. And we are doing everything possible to ensure that the capitals of Europe, which Russia does not particularly want to take into account, reach a level where Russia can no longer ignore Europe. As Arabs, we need to understand that Israel and the West are not our oppressors or enemies. We, Arabs, are our own worst enemies. We, Arabs, are our greatest oppressors. We, Arabs, have killed and oppressed a million times more of our people than the West and Israel can ever do. It is not Israel that married off my mother when she was a child. It is my people who did. It is not the West or Israel that has been bombing Yemen for the past decade and killed 400,000. It is us, Arabs, who did it. It is not the Israel that implanted Islamic extremism in the East and the West. It is our mosques, it is the books we worship, it is the Imams we follow, it is what we learn and what we teach. It is not the West that forces us to treat women like commodities. It is our people. And most of all, it is not the West or Israel that doesn’t value Arab lives. It is us, Arabs, who do not value human life. If we do not admit to ourselves that WE are the problem, that WE are refusing to progress, and that WE need to change – then change will never happen, blood will keep flowing, and we will never know peace. How do we expect the world and the International Community to respect us, when we don’t respect ourselves?

I have been seeing many photos of people handing out relief packages, and while this was necessary in the early days, I am concerned about how it affects the dignity of our people. I do not want Jamaica to be portrayed as a place where citizens are scrambling for food or fighting over packages. That is not who we are. We are an independent, proud people, even in times of hardship. If we are giving support, we must do it respectfully and quietly, protecting the dignity of those in distress. And those receiving help must also remember their dignity. This is why I announced that we will be transitioning away from handing out food packages. The system has become too politicized, who got, who didn’t get, and who was invited to distribute. That is not acceptable, and it is not the Jamaica we want to build. So we will move to a voucher or coupon system that allows people to purchase what they need directly, without stigma, without politics, and with their dignity intact.

But Russia does not, and continues its aerial terror: over the past week, more than 1,050 attack drones, nearly 1,300 aerial bombs, and more than 20 missiles have been launched at Ukraine to destroy cities and kill people. Those who seek negotiations do not deliberately strike civilians with ballistic missiles. To force Russia to stop its attacks, we need greater collective strength from the world. Strengthening our air defense, supporting our army, and ensuring effective security guarantees that will make the return of Russian aggression impossible—this is what we must focus on.
