If I hated Americans why would I want them to have healthcare? Why would I want to create a more equitable taxation structure where we tax the wealthy so we can pay for social safety nets that will lend a helping hand to Americans in dire straits?”

Basically, what they’re saying is: we’ll only keep the government open if you Democrats vote against one of your core principles—making sure people can afford healthcare. The problem, of course, is that this president and this Republican Congress are also happy to see the federal government destroyed. They’re giddy about being able to do even more damage in the context of a shutdown. That’s exactly the kind of chaos this president brings every single day—and what I think Americans are more and more fatigued with.
