Would you share some of the code that handles the state swap between world object and physical object of the "pixels". I am working on something that is supposed to function quite similar on the basic level but I am rather new to coding and would love to see how you solved it :)

Particles check array of world pixels, and if close to surface, they experience slowing down. When the particle stops, it disappears, writing a pixel to world array. Pixel->particle conversion clears pixels and creates particles inside a circle, that dictates such conversion.
