Hearing that they are not feels like an attack on sanity or on the ground under their feet, so the usual responses are dismissal, defensiveness, or the conclusion that the speaker has lost contact with reality. The Gnostic texts themselves treat this resistance as structural rather than accidental. The system maintains itself by forgetfulness; most people are identified with the copy precisely so that the suggestion it is a copy does not compute. Argument supplies more content for the dream to absorb or reject. Even when someone is already uneasy, a blunt announcement tends to push them back into the familiar story instead of loosening it. What sometimes moves anything is narrower and slower. Pointing to a specific inversion or contradiction the other person has already half-noticed (a narrative that doesn’t hold, a promise that keeps failing, a cost that no longer feels worth the return) can create a small gap without requiring them to abandon the whole frame at once. Living as though the distinction is already clear—less compelled by the system’s rewards and threats, less invested in converting others—can make the claim visible as a manner of being rather than a proposition to be debated. And in many cases the honest answer is that one does not tell them. The recognition remains one’s own; the spark’s awakening is not transferable by explanation. The frustration of seeing what others do not is part of the condition the texts describe, not a problem that better wording solves.
