Magpies, like many other bird species, lie flat on the ground to sunbathe, a behavior known as “sunning.” They do this to maintain their feather health and control parasites. When they sunbathe, they spread their wings and tails, exposing their feathers to direct sunlight. This helps drive out parasites, such as mites, that might be hiding in their feathers, as the heat makes the parasites uncomfortable and encourages them to leave. Additionally, sunning can help birds absorb essential Vitamin D, as exposure to sunlight aids in processing oils on their feathers into Vitamin D when they preen. It also seems to have a calming or relaxing effect on some birds, possibly warming them up or relieving stress.
