VIDEO | Mumbai: On the Maharashtra government's Marathi language requirement for commercial passenger vehicle drivers, Maharashtra Minister Pratap Sarnaik says, “People from every state in the country do business in Mumbai. Under our 1949 rule, they must have basic knowledge of Marathi, but they have not been speaking Marathi until now. So, we made a new rule that if someone does not have basic knowledge of the language, our department officials have been instructed to take legal action against them... After August 15, if anyone does not know Marathi, legal action will be taken. First, they will be given a three-month grace period, after which their licence will be cancelled, and if they still do not know Marathi, their permit will be cancelled. This is Maharashtra's culture, our tradition. If you do not agree to assimilate into it, then legal action against you is certain.”

They brought a written draft in which they made four points about the ongoing cases in agitation. Along with that, we discussed the other two demands: no retaliatory measures should be taken, compensation should be provided, and their five-point charter should be considered. We will provide them with copy of the FIRs, and no action will be taken. The second thing that has been said is that regarding compensation, the government has clearly stated that we also sympathize. We all have said that there will be compensation according to the rules and regulations, whatever maximum will be possible will be given to them."
