"Mainstream cinema lives off the pious lie that the big problems facing humanity can be solved." --- Michael Haneke

I’ve arrived at the same view and now I can hardly watch anything mainstream. Fortunately, I have a Criterion subscription and access to Tarkovsky et al. But I honestly wish I could go back to when I didn’t hold this view. It’s like learning about nice wine; you can’t drink the crap after. I wish I could drink crap; it’s cheaper and easier to find.

Art should disturb the comfortable and comfort the disturbed - Cesar A Cruz

Nope, it lives off the idea that people like to see big problems being solved even when they know it's fiction, or that they just like to escape from their own big problems for a couple of hours. Michael Haneke = cynic

@TobiasMenzies Agreed, it may not be, but as they say, if you can be anything, be kind, we have to live with hope.

Love hearing his perspective, even tho I strongly disagree. People have always told stories to reassure, to connect, to inspire. Too much? Sometimes. But in the best movies, hope isn’t easy, but it is essential.

Thank God for Michael Haneke.

@TobiasMenzies And that's exactly why I like Arthouse & Indie films that give me space for my own thoughts. And yes, some problems in the world haven't a happy ending & no solutions. The only important thing is that at the end-in the film or in my imagination- there is still a sparkle of hope.

I watch it for entertainment 🤷🏻♂️

Except we do? I love some of the Haneke films, but tf does he know about world problems?

So true
