$META delaying the launch of Ray-Ban Display smart glasses in Europe due to higher-than-expected demand in the US is great news. The numbers are still irrelevant, but Zuck’s vision — where the ~2 billion people who already wear glasses every day eventually switch to smart glasses — is slowly starting to gain traction. A world where smart glasses become the default device for many isn’t that far away. And for now, META is years ahead of its closest competitor. All $META needs to do is successfully integrate these smart glasses with a frontier AI model.

Introducing Sai-Fi: an open source app that lets you talk to AI agent Sai through a pair of Meta Ray-Ban glasses. Sai is an autonomous computer-use agent. It can see the screen, move the mouse, type, and keep working even when you are away. We used Meta Ray-Bans for the first prototype but the glasses aren't really the point. Underneath is the Sai API and a voice concierge designed to work across different devices. Google's Ai Gemini was recently licensed by Apple to power Ai on their devices. Now Mark Zuckerberg seems to be upset at his Ai team and their lack of progress. They have delayed their "Avocado" until May after failing to perform against others. Google Gemini does not use Nvidia chips. Google designed their own Ai chips. Not all Ai hyperscalers will continue. Some will give up. Mark Zuckerberg's META might be the first to give up on their own Ai and just license Gemini, following the Apple model. When I got up this morning I had no clue I would be invited to see Jeremy Bailensen speak at Stanford University. He runs Stanford’s Holodeck research. XR/AR/VR. Here he shares the latest research. Exclusive to X. This talk changed several things I thought I knew about the future. Out in the hallway we were talking and an engineer who is working on Google’s glasses warned me that Google’s lightweight glasses will not ship this year that they showed off at Google IO. He says they need another year to ship those, that XREAL 👓 will start with a “middle weight” that has beautiful color screens but that you won’t wear to the shopping mall. Coming later this year. And with a heavier weight one that competes with Apple Vision Pro, coming around Christmas. Meta comes in October with a light weight pair that you can wear everywhere. Think of a Rayban that has a display in one eye. And that Apple will have a new Vision Pro that will be lighter than the first one, coming around Christmas, so expect it to ship in first half of next year. Google has a two year lead on Apple in AI, maybe more, which we already knew. Translation: the future of Holodecks is still out there. This talk is important.

Day 2 of recreating Meta’s new AR glasses on my Quest. After adding microgestures to navigate the UI. Today, I built a simple camera that can zoom using Pinch and Twist. It felt really cool to scroll through all the pictures I took in the carousel. But the best addition is definitely the contextual AI that lets me send whatever I’m looking at to an AI and instantly get more information. This project is getting more and more challenging but I'm having a lot of fun and it's cool to see the potential of these new AR glasses. And yes, the complete Unity project will be available very soon on my Patreon if you’d like to see how I did it 👉

"This is not the end of VR. It's not collapsing. If you pay attention to what's going to be coming out from Meta and others over the next 12 months, you're going to see a lot of progress." Palmer Luckey gives his latest perspective on the VR industry: John: "How are you thinking about VR these days? Everyone's sort of writing down their investments and pulling back." Palmer: "I will challenge your premise there, which is that people are pulling back. I think that's driven mostly by people sensationalizing Meta firing a bunch of people." "They got rid of 10% of the Reality Labs team in one layoff. Remember that they have something like 8% or 9% annual churn naturally and organically, not including firings. So what you're really talking about is basically pulling six months of churn forward into a single month. And they're still spending more on VR than anybody by an order of magnitude." "Meta and Sony and Apple and Google and all of these other companies are going to be hitting the [Apple Vision Pro] level of visual fidelity. They're going to be doing it with headsets that are far smaller, far lighter than what you see from Vision Pro. And I actually remain very optimistic."

These are the Rokid Glasses A pair of smart glasses very similar to the Meta RayBan but powered by the AR1, with the addition of a Monochrome binocular Waveguide display for Live translation, Ai recognition, teleprompter, navigation and more. Plus like the RayBan camera and audio. The live translation was surprisingly good, and fast. They are already available in China. Hopefully we will get them in the US soon! They are just 49 grams! It's crazy to see how the smart glasses are evolving fast. #CES2025 #rokid The last video is from their Air Max 2 6DoF version, for AR at the museum!
