A young Fulani man, who says he was born and raised in Cross River State, made serious allegations during a video call with D English Alhaji, claiming that some influential Fulani politicians, imams and wealthy individuals are allegedly involved in sponsoring kidnapping, terrorism and violence in Nigeria. He went further by naming individuals he claimed were behind some of these activities. These are serious allegations and should not simply be dismissed or accepted without investigation. If the individuals named have evidence against them, the appropriate security agencies should investigate and prosecute anyone found responsible, regardless of ethnicity, religion or political position. Terrorism and kidnapping are not the crimes of an entire ethnic or religious group. The focus should be on identifying the individuals financing, organizing and enabling these criminal networks and holding them accountable under the law. Nigerians deserve the truth, justice and security.

We warned about this ticking time bomb years ago. We were dismissed as alarmists and populists. Now chickens are coming back to roost! More than three decades into democracy, the face of poverty, unemployment, inequality, hunger, landlessness, drug addiction, alcohol abuse and teenage pregnancy remains overwhelmingly black. The deep social and economic crisis confronting millions of working-class and poor communities has not disappeared simply because it is no longer fashionable to talk about it. When a society is pushed to breaking point, no one can predict or control the direction that anger will take. If the real causes of the crisis are not confronted, people will look for scapegoats. In one place migrants will be blamed. In another, people from different provinces will be targeted. Elsewhere, women, gays and lesbians, or other vulnerable groups will become the focus of frustration and resentment. History teaches us that when poverty, unemployment and inequality are allowed to deepen, and when progressive forces fail to provide leadership and solutions, division, hatred and social instability fill the vacuum. The challenge is to unite the victims of the crisis against its root causes!
